I typically only carry a sword when I explore caves.
I have a bow and arrows, but I don't like taking them with me because they take up two slots and are a fairly limited resource. Whenever I encounter a creeper, I mostly just let it follow me and try to get out of maximum blast range when it explodes.
I've had luck in some cases when a creeper gets stuck in a two-block deep hole and I can kill it there, but that isn't very reliable.
How do you slay creepers? Is there a better way that I'm missing?
I've also tried snowballs, but they don't seem to be very effective (and you can only carry 16 snowballs per slot, and they don't deal much damage, so it doesn't seem to be a great option either).
You can easily get in 3 hits before they explode. I kill them consistently with a normal iron sword. Just make sure when you hit them they aren't some place where they can fall off or mess up your 3 consecutive hits. You only have to back off when fighting multiples.
Jump slashing them will score critical on them making short work. If you tend to be in high places you may be troll by using a knockback sword flinging them off high ledges.

"It's not enough you have the will to care. What are you going to do to show it?"
If you don't want to risk taking a hit and you're unarmored: walk up to it until it starts exploding, then walk back about two blocks (I think). It'll explode, and you'll take minimal damage.
Alternatively, if you have an iron or diamond sword, three hits will kill it; as long as you don't knock it out of range or miss or something, this is enough to kill it before it explodes if you walk up to it and start slashing it. Avoid sprint-hitting it if you do this; sprint hitting is a great tactic if you have a stone or weaker sword, but if you try to mix these two tactics you'll just get an explosion in the face. If things go south (e.g. you miss for one reason or another), quickly sprint hit it and back up; it'll minimize the damage you take.
Creepers are the easiest common mob IMO, really not that hard to deal with. Just annoying with the holes they leave.
I guess I could attempt to use flint and steel on it too... I don't usually take that with me. For some reason, I don't do well with the strike and jump back technique. I guess I'm just not fast enough/need more practice... they usually wind up blowing up before I kill them (and I usually have a diamond sword).

You could simply kill them and avoid the hole, easy enough.
My favourite method is Creepersmash. I never use it as it is quite impractical, but is badass nonetheless. It doesn't kill creepers per se, but turns them into deadly missiles! You light it, then throw it with knockback or punch. It has a certain RWBY feel to it.
You don't even need to use Knockback or Punch, as creepers will still explode on you even if their attack deals miniscule damage or completely misses. I do it all the time, it's quite convenient if there's a mob of zombies coming along with the creeper (not like the zombies would actually kill me, though, but it saves on sword durability).

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

And i dont even play minecraft anymore.
That outta help.
Method #1: (I use this method when I have a sword lower then diamond)
•Sprint-hit the creeper, back up really fast, sprint-hit the creeper, back up really fast, etc.
Method #2 (I use this method when I have a diamond sword)
•Walk up to the creeper and hit it super fast.
Both work if you're careful enough.

If you have a sword with Knockback 1, you can easily kill them. Hit, they fly away and come back. Hit again, hit again, dead.
Or you can charge, spam the click and they die before exploding.
You could simply kill them and avoid the hole, easy enough.

Thanks! That gives me some ideas!
