The players of the SMP server I've been experimenting on have called me the Water Bender, so I've simplified and expanded on water techniques others have developed (like NEPHEW) and here's the first of my Minecraft Water Bending tutorials.
This canal can propel a player forward on a flat surface indefinitely, using only water and a few signs. If enclosed for safety or tunneled underground it's a poor man's mine track that can push you to your far-away base while you're doing something else.
A double wide version of this works for boats - just mirror the other half of the canal. I have designs for pushing players, boats, and mobs uphill and around corners I'll post.
Any youtube videographers interested in recording this series?
I haven't seen much of your idea, but the boat sounds like what Etho did in his underground water highway. I'll try to hunt up a link for you.
EDIT: Yeah, it seems like you figured out the idea Etho did. Here is a link to his video:
Agreed, it looks like we're leveraging the same underlying principle, that water cannot flow into a space occupied by a sign but boats and players can.
An interesting twist is that these work submerged in water, so you can cross lakes as well. The latest update nerfed the speed of some of these in SMP somehow, but boat steering is also busted so maybe they will both be fixed.
My self-powered canal works for players, where Etho's main track has gaps and will only work for boats.
Etho's cornering is very smooth. I'm going to have to study that part. And I'm impressed at how few boats he breaks. Maybe we should collaborate.
Next I'll show how to move boats uphill in half block increments.
Out of curiousity, does it need to be one block thick? Boats have a tendency to break in that amount of space. Also, I'm assuming ladders also work, is this correct?

You can mirror it for a 2-wide canal suitable for boats. Put signs and water on the other side too. With the right placement of signs, you can make it as wide as you like -- speed boat racing? It sounds like I should post those designs too. Unless you use a boat cartridge system, hand placing in a 2-wide track is frustrating, so I generally have a larger loading area with water blocks feeds the whole zone into the canal.
Ladders stink, because they do take up a sliver of physical space in the block. You can die jumping down a tunnel onto the top of a ladder segment. Signs are completely "massless" and you (and boats) can pass through them from any angle.

Oh. Yeah, forgot about that. That's why you can stand on ladders...
when trying to make a two block wide version of this (it works btw), when placing the sign for the other side of the canal a most interesting glitch accrued; I was constantly being dragged at full water force back too the site of the canal. No matter where I jumped or ran too I was being "dragged" full force back too the canal even though i wasn't in the water, when I was dragged back too the canal the glitch stopped.
I shall attempt to obtain footage of the said event if I am able to replicate it.
are you placing the signs like this:

Because I was having the same problem and putting the canal like that fixed it.
Here's a video of your canal, with a few tweaks. I used pressure plates to block the water on the sides for improved visibility, and replaced most of the floor with ice for similar reasons.
Thanks for the video codewarrior! (Not to mention all the great stuff you've done for Minecraft!)
((Wait I just realized you did the old Laboratory and the Abattoir this week -- absolutely awesome! OK I'll stop now.))
And thanks for pointing out that pressure plates work on the floor of this design. I like the possibilities that opens up for security. Flooding a canal with lava behind you is a good way to make sure you aren't being followed.
Did you notice a speed increase with the ice floor? Water moves dropped items doubletime on ice but I don't know about players. (pausing to test...) Unfortunately no speed-up on ice for players.
It took me about 15 minutes to get my canal using this Self-Powered canal thing right, but I am currently making a boat superhighway from the 4th floor of the middle tower of my castle.

it will obviously be CHOCOLATE ORE
used to make cocoa beans and CHOCOLATE CAKE and CHOCOLATE INGOTS
CHOCOLATE INGOTS will be used to make CHOCOLATE TOOLS which are obviously much stronger than diamond and also may be eaten if you are hungry.
