You're telling me Mojang included dogs, move-able respawn points, bug fixes, AND used a well deserve afternoon of rest was used to program in something as simple as achievements and stat tracking as an added bonus to us for this update?
I think a better "added bonus" would be more content. Like I said, they're wasting time on something that adds nothing to the gameplay.
You understand that we don't deserve extra content right?
Wow. I can't believe how quickly you lost me, at the very first sentence. That's quite an accomplishment.
We entirely deserve more content. We paid for the game under the impression that, as Notch has said, he would continue making updates for it for as long as people play it. At the very least we deserve bug and content fixes, as other people have pointed out. All of this should take priority over a stat tracker. Just because every other game implements these as a lazy method of adding faux content doesn't mean Minecraft should.
Yes, Notch is wasting his time on this crap because there are so many important things he could be adding or fixing. LIke:
1. Flowers don't grow
2. Can't farm animals
3. Gold is still useless
4. Lanterns remember that? How about giving us a real light source so we don't have to spam torches?
5. More mobs to interact with
6. Real furniture that we can put in our empty houses
7. How about fixing boats?
8. Give us something to do in the nether other than die
9. Hey why not just fix the portals so they actually work
10. Let us paint a block that doesn't catch on fire instantly?
Those are just off the top of my head. There are many, many more.
All of these would be appreciated.

Achievements are an update, believe it or not. They're an addition to the game that won't have been in before 1.4. So.. I don't really see why you're complaining. New content is new content.

Or, yunno, read the first post. The answers are there, Obi Wan.

You call it new content, I call it a cop out. I'm all for achievements, but this isn't the time to add them. There are meatier things that could be implemented. Just seems like they figured they need to do an update and they chose something easy to give the illusion of progress.
It's just so half-assed all around. An achievement system that can be easily cheated? What's the point? Might as well have an online scoreboard, but you enter your own score. It's meaningless.
I agree that they should be working on more important things. Games in a "beta" state aren't supposed to be adding things that are purely there for aesthetics. Especially since the game itself still has glitches and bugs, and is just calling out for expansion in the actual gameplay. One could argue that the Wolves are also a waste of time though. IMO at this point this game needs more core gameplay, not expansions on what they already have.

I think wolves are a great idea that will add a lot of dynamic to the gameplay. As long as they're not super-overpowered they'll be a pretty damn awesome addition to the game.
The only achievements I ever cared about was the impossible badge for the original Meat Boy flash game on Kongregate. Seeing as Minecraft is a more like a toy than a game (see Yahtzee's review of Minecraft), Notch and the others should be adding more gameplay and tools like that modding api or adventure mode. Eventually, without more gameplay, even the achievements will become stale.
Wow, thats a rather impressive list of horrible suggestions, golems, meteors and wool half steps
Clay golems which dry into statues in the daylight are a bad idea?
Obsidian meteors which rain down once in a blue moon with super-rare magic new gems inside are a bad idea?
Wool half steps... wool half steps... are a bad idea... ?
You so very, very mad.
I'll agree on the wool half steps, sounds weird at first, but I always see wool as carpet, and carpeted steps are completely reasonable. Not a bad idea at all really IMO.

Clay golems which dry into statues in the daylight is a crappy idea. You know how glitchy that could be and hard to program? A moving object just...doesn't turn into clay. Or if Notch could get around making your own clay golem would actually not work...
Obsidian meteors just don't fit into the feel of Minecraft. And Notch said that there will be no more gems/ores.
Wool half steps are an excellent idea, notch will probably get around to it.
The whole achievement topic:
Personally I think it will be just another update. There's nothing to get worked up about. People thought some things were bad ideas and they left it alone. No-one has to agree with you all the time. Just, let it go and think of the people who are having heaps of fun and you can just get back to Minecraft. No problem there.
You jerkoffs still arguing? Errgh, put it to rest already. We all know Notch is a lazy *******. He's only doing achievements to escape the hard work (wolfs) and has what's-his-name working on them instead.
I'm sure eventually he'll get to the point where he doesn't even program anymore. He'll just be sipping tequila and eating cheetohs while his code monkeys do all the work; and he CAN! He's mother ****ing Notch, the creator of Minecraft: The Infiniminer Copycat that made him over a million US dollars. What do you expect?!

Or he has a difference of opinion. Just sayin'. We may as well be civil about things.
Anyways, to the point: I can certainly see your point and understand why you would want new content to take priority. I personally feel much the same. However, as pointed out, there is actually new content involved in the next update.
A large number of people will greatly appreciate achievements and stats, so it is the smart move from a business point of view. People are naturally competitive.
It's also out of his system, so he can focus on something else, hopefully with equal passion and enthusiasm. I'm not sure if you've ever coded, but it can be very repetitive. You have to love it, which means slight detours from what you may have originally planned. With this done, I hope to see a great number of the ideas presented in the forums and elsewhere applied to the game. I'd love to see new blocks and, more importantly, depth added to the use of blocks and objects already in the game. The game is dependent on options: the more ways to play, the better the game becomes. It is a different game to each person.
On a personal note, I disagree with the sentiment that new content grows stale. A single new block adds significantly to the complexity of a building's design and thus provides for endless hours exploring what can be done. This does not apply to everyone every time: one person may find the block hideous, while someone will think of a lovely use for it. But that is neither here nor there.

It wouldn't be glitchy at all. It'd be exactly the same as any other mob, except when it's exposed to sun-level light it stops moving and would take 12 seconds to mine apart. How would that be glitchy?
A moving object just...doesn't turn into clay.
Huh?
Obsidian meteors just don't fit into the feel of Minecraft. And Notch said that there will be no more gems/ores.
I think they totally fit the feel of Minecraft, and if Notch has said there will be no more gems/ores I will be severely disappoint. Searching for specific gems and ores is one of the most fun aspects of Minecraft, I'd be very sad if more were not added.

I doubt Black Jesus riding a cloud to Earth, slapping the nerdrage in the face, would stop the nerdrage. Ever.
I honestly would much prefer new real content, but I'm not hating the stat tracker, I just think it sounds like the kind of thing you could add in later, I don't see a high demand for it.
But on the topic of sandstone, being the most common building element on my server. . . it's sorta rare for any big projects you have to leave entire deserts exposed to stone
and that looks ugly, so I've just been /giving sandstone out. lol
Also, wool half steps, yes, the clay golem idea sounds rocking, and I would definitely remove meteors from the game if they damaged terrain at all. I like my world to look pretty. . .obviously. lol
mines are fine, you don't see those.

Well, as I said, the meteors would be pretty damn rare. I have creepers disabled on my server, but the chances of a meteorite which spawns once every thousand days or so striking one of the buildings in such a large world is kind of low, and even if it did, it would be worth it just to harvest the gems inside.
Your sarcastic tone makes me smirk at your feeble mind . . .
It's not really your game . . . So I don't exactly understand why you think you should be making the decisions. The mojang-gang is on a short hiatus from some of the serious updates due to office construction, so doesn't it make sense that "lesser" (lesser based solely on your own personal opinion) updates would be worked on during that time?
Honestly I feel that Notch simply wants to implement tasks for the players to do that they may not of even considered. And I can't wait to do some of them, not because I'm bored, but because it sounds interesting.
There's a big difference between boredom and a lack of ingenuity . . .
On a side note . . . I wonder how many wolves we can have . . . It seems I know just the unimaginative troll to sick them upon.

I never look at achievements in any of the games I buy, you walked 10 steps *achievement*, you have eaten 5 pork chops *achievement*, you made a torch *achievement*, its like celebrating when you open your front door or read the paper, pretty pointless.
Tasks like this will probably not be on the achievement chart . . . your exaggerating to try to stress your disdain with other games' achievements. This isn't Halo . . . I'd guess that these achievements would be in the same rank as the really fun Half-life 2 achievements. (1 bullet Achievement was HAAAAAAAARD, but was pleasing to have accomplished.)
