With an official statistics screen on the Minecraft website, you can guess what the stats will look like:
TOTAL DIAMOND MINED
Johnny - 1,371,295
Bob - 567,891
Gary - 241
These stats are assuming Beta 1.4 came out about a week ago. In a week, Gary managed to find 241 diamond (legit for a good miner.) Bob and Johnny however have acquired a ridiculous number of diamonds in a week, therefore it is evident they likely used some crazy mod that makes the world diamonds and makes them break instantly, which is unfair for Gary. The moment Beta 1.4 goes live, mods that give players advantages will in fact become cheating, and lots of them will appear so people can get high on the statistics page and get lots of achievements. This seems difficult to prevent, so what do you guys think?
Well have any of you ever played Mario Kart Wii? It has an interesting feature where you can see the World and Regional record for any track. I was at one point number 10 in my region on one track, Coconut Mall behind only about 6 seconds. Then suddenly, a swarm of hackers attacked the game. World records suddenly became impossible things like less than 1 second for each track. I went from an "A" rating and being 10th in my region to a "C" rating and being about 26 (Although some legit players may have passed me). Can you imagine someone's rage if they were one of the most amazing miners in the world and had mined out hundreds of diamond in a few days after the update, only to be surpassed by a cheater?
Stats are on the website for bragging rights. They are like the duel stats in TF2, you know, how it shows how many duels your friends won? They appear in their respective places so that people can be recognized for their accomplishments. Gary would be recognized for his mining skills and would be well respected in the community. This all changes if the stats are full of cheaters. It ruins the entire purpose of them even existing.
Maybe Notch could implement a system similar to Valve's, where if you use a mod or a cheat, then stats and achievements are disabled in that session. That would require full modding support in 1.4 however, something which has not been worked on and is not planned.
I think stats are more for the player of the game, rather then other people to compare themselves with. Are you asking for stats not to be implemented, or mods to be removed? Or are you just complaining?

Neither, read my full post rather than just a fragment of it.
Let me start with saying how incredibly bizarre the topic title is (I mean, you can already 'cheat' so what's so surprising?)
Yeah, well, if you play a game just for bragging rights, the you probably deserve losing your 'status'.
Personally i think stats and achievements are as pointless as it can get, especially in this game. The only excuse for achievements is when they give something (like in TF2 or Mass Effect 1)

The only way to avoid this is to not add achievements or stats at all. Mass people will quit if mods are removed/considered cheating. A few groups of people will be disappointed if stats or achievements are removed before they even come out.
Thing is, once Notch adds the stats, he'll never be really allowed to remove them again. Once people start getting their stats up, and, let's face it, claiming superiority over everyone else because of it, they'll get mad if he removes it.
You have a good point. But i dont think people care about the stats that much.

Guys, don't worry about cheating. Achievements/Stats are just for yourself (just like everything else in Minecraft). Nobody will care about world rankings, probably just individual server rankings at max.
Oh how naive you are. If anything even looks the slightest bit like a competition, people will care. Care enough to cheat their way to the top....and care enough to whine endlessly about the people who cheated their way to the top....
I think stats and achievements are a waste of Notch's time. He could be doing new blocks, new crafting recipies, bugfixes in the time he uses on stats and achivements. Apart from that, I could not care less.
personally, I don't think that stats will matter that much, cause if it's noted like "849 diamonds mined" or something like that, I bet a fair number of existing players will respond with "ok, now what have you built?"
if you're small enough to care more about number stats then what you've built, you can whine about it all you like, you're still gonna look silly.

How is this unfair for Gary?
What's the problem here? His epenis isn't as big as Bob's or Johnny's?
Minecraft is a sandbox-style game. It isn't like there's even some objective measure of success. Apparently you think that the number of diamonds mined is somehow important... But what if I personally really like green wool, and couldn't care less about diamonds? Are you going to complain when I run a mod that turns all my sheep green and kicks my "number of green sheep punched" into the thousands overnight?
Cheating doesn't even enter into this. People run all sorts of different mods and plugins to accomplish different goals.
Is it cheating to always play on peaceful and have a "number of times killed by creepers" of zero? Does that make me somehow better (or worse) than some guy who always plays on hard and has died to creepers 12 times in the last month?
Is it cheating to spawn a pile of diamonds so I can complete a diamond tower in SSP that nobody else will ever see? That will in no way affect anyone else, ever? Is there something wrong with just wanting to build something epic, and not wanting to spend weeks mining the resources? Does that make me a bad person?
Even in SMP, different servers have different rules. My private SMP server is daylight all the time, with no monsters, and the ability to warp to various places. Some other servers have iconomy installed and stores set up. Other servers have monsters enabled, or maybe make it night all the time.
I can't even wrap my head around this. It's like accusing somebody of cheating at solitaire.
I'll probably just use the stats to keep track of my own stuff that I do.
Just something to look at when I'm bored to go "Oh that's interesting, Moving on... OMG MY LITTLE PONIES IS ON!"
Then minecraft got turned off for a long time.
And such it has been written.
In the end, some of us will care that people cheat and the others will continue to live on with a peace of mind ignoring the blasphemy.

I don't want this to be TF2 where "HERP DERP LOOK AT THESE ACHIVEMENTS I GOT I KILLED 2004 SCOUTS HERR UDDEER"

2 words - modded servers.
...But that's just my opinion.
My DeviantART, requests welcome.
B14 - My Texture Pack!
Need textures for your mod? Inquire within, just read the rules.
But wouldn't that mean that people using texture packs(The ones installed via patcher) can't get on the statistics list?

The only way is to avoid putting in stats.

Just wait and see.
Apathy FTW!
If Stats > Fixed Set Number (Limit) then don't display the stat.
Silver is the money of Gentlemen
Copper is the money of Peasants
Debt is the money of Slaves
"Always forgive your enemies - nothing annoys them so much."
If Stats > Time (Minutes) and Stats > Limit (Number) then do not display it.
Cheating is cheating even if its against NPCs.
That being said, this is a sandbox game that openly allows player mods of any type.
Making it rather hard to cheat when the rules say any thing goes.
