I'm attempting, on my server, to create a flaming arrow trap that spans a bridge. I am using dispensers, wooden pressure plates, lava, and red wire.
The problem I am having though is the dispensers are not activating when the red stone does.
This is the layout of the covered bridge. The redstone wire is under the pressure plates, and all of it activates whenever you touch any pressure plate. All the redstone is activating just fine, but the dispensers are still not activating. The position of the dispensers will be changed periodically to deter intruders, and the entire point is to memorize and time where the arrows are coming from, since they should be shooting out constantly while someone is on the pressure plates. Lava will be placed above the dispensers and glass when this is finished, hiding the dispensers and glass, and turning them in to flaming arrows.
The redstone wire stretches from under to around and behind the dispensers, so is touching them directly at all times. I tried just underneath the dispensers at first, but when that didn't work opted for this "stretch around" build instead. I don't know why it's not activating them. Do I need to fill them with more arrows? Do the arrows have to be in specific slots? Do dispensers not work right on multiplayer?
I looked at your pictures, and I see what your problem is. You cannot power a dispenser by running redstone underneath it. The redstone has to go directly into the dispenser, the same way as with a noteblock. Also, if you want the dispenser to fire more than one arrow at each step onto a pressure plate, you would have to wire it up to either a rapid pulsar, for fast firing (recommended) or to a clock of some sort. With this, you could do it a couple of different ways. 1) you could have the rapid pulsar activate the dispenser as long as someone is on the pressure plate, or 2) you could hook up the rapid pulsar to an RS-NOR latch that automatically turns itself off after a certain amount of time. Here is an example:
The RS-NOR latch is on the left side. Use repeaters, such as I have, to extend how long the dispenser is activated. A pressure plate to turn it on is at the top. Before the rapid pulsar, on the right side (before the dispenser), it is important to invert the signal so that the rapid pulsar is only allowed to be activated when the pressure plate is stepped on. It is also important to remember to put a steady line of redstone connected to the dispenser as well with this setup (that is the line of redstone with the torch above the dispenser). This is so the dispenser will "accept" all of the pulses coming from the rapid pulsar. Hope that helps.
I'm not only running redstone underneath it, but also behind it. Will the redstone not repeat the shot with every new pressure plate that's stepped on?
Well, if you are running it behind the dispenser too, is it running directly into it, or just by it? And yes, the dispenser will shoot with every step on the pressure plates, as long as all of them are connected to it. But, it will only fire one shot with each step on a pressure plate. With this setup, it will shoot more arrows with each step on a pressure plate. I am guessing that you would want to kill the person walking across the pressure plates, and if so, then one arrow at a time would make it difficult to kill the person, since they will not always hit. Therefore, increasing the amount of arrows fired at a time may be a good idea. You can always adjust the delay of the repeaters to fit about how many arrows will fire at each step. But, if you want to stick with your method, then remember to have the redstone going directly into the dispenser like so:
= redstone
= dispenser

Also, just as an FYI, flaming arrows, if I remember correctly, don't do any more damage than normal arrows. They are more for show.
It's a little hard to tell from the pictures, but is the redstone wire just running along the brick behind the dispenser, or is it leading into the dispenser? It won't work if you are just running along side, I believe.

I have pictures to help!

Where the chest=dispenser and fire=redstone wire.
*edit* ninja'd...
Woot, my first ninja
The lava is going to be just to hide where the dispensers are, to make it harder to time. Plus flaming arrows are cool.
Thanks for your help guys.
