Maybe if you right-click them holding a Mob Drop (Ex, Bones for Skeletons) they will turn and face the direction of the nearest mob with that drop. You know, since dogs/wolves can sniff things out by smelling related objects.

Awesome idea. I have a hard time finding creepers, and I want to do some TNT mining. That would make it soooo much easier. (I know they won't attack creepers, but it'd be cool if they'd point!)
I would be less excited if i wasnt an idiot and gave up minecraft for lent!!!!! i got one month left and each day feels like 10...ugh....im so stupid....
I could be a complete horses **** and say something regarding ones adherence to religious ritual but I'll keep my smart-**** comments to myself. I do sympathize with you though. I have tried repeatedly to cut myself off from computer gaming but it only made me even more irritable and depressed than I am already. After 2 weeks (my record) everyone was relieved when I finally got back on to the computer. XD
Also, at first, I thought wolves would be a cool addition but now, it seems that everyone wants to treat them like they are playing the sims wanting this accessory or that command and I suddenly feel like I am surrounded by a bunch of 12 year old girls who just want to play minecraft so that they can play with their "wolfie" and dress it up pretty , like the wolf in game would act as a substitute for the real dog their parents won't let them have. Kind of makes me loathe and dread the coming update and the subsequent, "oh! Look what my wolfie did!" an, "omg mai wulfie iz sooooo adorable!" Threads.
Wish notch would start adding more useful things like verticle half blocks and the ability to turn a block in to a half block by right clicking with the shovel or pickaxe, ore, wool, logs, and numerous other blocks would be exempt of course. These last couple updates just have not felt worthy of their own version numbers and I don't know if/when we will get an update which would warrant one from my opinion, but the implementation of weather, ray tracing (dynamic lighting involving the movement of light and shadow in relation to the sun and moon), and fixes to the black screen, chunk error, and falling through blocks upon map loading bugs would go a long way for me, as well as implementing official mod support.
I wonder what happens with the wolves when we're on a boat, since boats can go rather fast? Surely, they can't follow swimming at that speed? Will they follow but more slowly and eventually find us/respawn near us on another shore?
Although I'm rather excited about wolves, I think that's quite an odd idea to add into the game at this point. I would personally have liked wild horses to tame, so we'd be able to ride them and travel faster. Hope this is something they consider later on... it takes forever to walk back to some faraway lands without the ability to run or have a faster mount...
What I would like most, though, is the implementation of weather, and maybe birds sounds when in the woods. The world is way too static and feels dead to me.
-The ability to, not exactly kill them, but like with other animals, have the ability to get a fur pelt when you hit them. It wouldn't kill them, kind of like when getting wool from a sheep. Although with wolves, they may turn hostile. Then of course you would need items made with a fur pelt. Maybe some home items, like fur carpet or a rug.
-The ability to add armor to wolves. Their armor would consist of a helmet (with ear holes of course) and a body plate. The body plate would cover all of their main body, and would require 7 out of 9 or 8 out of 9 armor spots, while the wolf would be able to use any helmet made for a human character, since the square structure of the game would allow.
-After taming a wolf, you have the ability to name them. You would then have the ability to use a command called /call. So if ever one of your wolves got seperated from you and doesn't come back on his own, if he is fighting an enemy or for whatever reason, you could say /call [insert wolf name here] and the wolf's code would then make getting to your position its number one priority.

Death to theSkeletons!!!!Even though they are all ready dead.....
The fur pelt i dont find as a good diea in my opinion, if there was you should have to kill them first you cant skin an animal and have it live. But the naming and armor is a great idea. I have already thought of the naming but the armor is new that would be nice to have increased health on your dog. But what would happen when it dies? do you get the armor back?

Here, here. Seconded sir.
Why even have a compass?
Are you trying to tell me that I have to build at my spawn point every time unless I want to have a useless piece of equipment in the compass?
me too.
