Muncher, you say wolves serve no purpose, yet they have the practical use of being able to kill mobs for you. You also say they're just there to look cute, well bookshelves are just there to look good too, yet you support bookshelves because they make your house look better. :sleep.gif: Wut.
Well with most people, after you've survived your first night, your civilized. You have a house. Once you have that, you either mine or build something. A castle, a town, a house, a skyscraper, and stuff like that. Thats not really survival. Also, you probably wont be finding and taming wolves on your first few days. You need bones and wolves are supposed to be rare. I cant wait for the new update.
Wolves add depth to the game. Its fun to go out into the forest, and see something other than a pig hopping around.
Besides, if you don't like it.... (I realize it's been said hundreds of times already), Just ignore them. Notch isn't forcing you to have a wolf. If you want to say wolves serve no purpose due to the fact that they're "useless", then all the passive mobs serve no purpose. You don't NEED pork, You can farm for bread. You don't NEED sheep, you can make wool from string. You don't need leather, you can make iron armor. Don't need chickens either. You get feathers from zombies.
The point is, You don't HAVE to do something, just because it's implemented. If you don't like it, don't use it.
Besides, it's not like this update will ONLY contain wolves, Jesus Christ. There are going to be more water mobs, and potentially stats and achievements. I don't like colored blocks, but I don't go on the forums and start complaining about it, just because it "has no use." If you REALLY have some intense hatred or dislike of wolves, then mod your game to remove them.
This game isn't about survival anyways. Unless you're seriously video game challenged, you should have no problem becoming extremely prosperous playing on Hard.
I completely agree. I think dogs will be useless. They are just in the game so the kids that play the game can play with a fake dogs, and peter molyneux can bring his unhealthy attraction to dogs to minecraft.
For those that don't know peter molyneux was the one that got notch to put wolves in the game, he apparently has some sort of fetish, as in The Fable games your character gets strangely intimate, and SLEEPS with his dog. Also peter molyneux seems to think players can get attached to NPCs with on line of dialogue. I think that **** should stay out of minecraft But OH WELL.
Wolves are just so the pathetic people that play this game, who can't afford real dogs or real friends can feel loved by a fake pixel dog. Dog's don't add or enhance the game at all.
AHAHAHAHa. I am seriosuly hopping this is a joke post...
No, seriously.

See? They're low on health, so they're power is balanced. You could always ignore them, like you said not to suggest. It works just as well. Or request a mod to disable certain mobs from spawning.
1. If you don't like wolves and want to be lonely, don't tame any.
2. If you don't like forever lasting torches and want there to be danger, knock them down.
3. If you don't like the way Portals to the Nether allow you to travel long distances, don't build them.
You don't have to tame the wolves if you dont want to.

I only read the first two pages but I'm going to say something.
The whole 'don't use it!' is perfectly valid.
This game is a sandbox game, play it however you like, when I used to play in the sandpit at school I didn't use the tools we had there. I used my hands to make stuff.
So, play it however you want and don't whine and complain about something you don't like, this isn't your game.

Talent didn't go anywhere, it just gets lost in all the noise. You have to find it.
Let's talk realism: if you were on an uncharted island, would you be able to find and tame a wolf? I understand the game has other unrealistic stuff in it, but they have some logic to them.
If you were on an uncharted island, would you be able to immediately dig yourself a hole in the dirt?
If you were on an uncharted island, would you be able to make a boat to escape within one minute?
If you were on an uncharted island, would you soon be killed by explosive leaf monsters which appear in darkness?
Robinson Crusoe was shipwrecked, and in a few years he'd tamed a dog, two wild cats, a tortoise, some goats, and a parrot. You can get most of those things in mods already.
That argument is invalid. Always. It would be allright if there was just singleplayer, but there's SMP. On any server with PVP allowed, everything will be used against you. Redstone, portals, .. wolves. People with the biggest mob tower yielding the biggest amounts of bones will dominate PVP servers with their wolfpack of doom. Not good. At all.
Plenty of plugins allow you to choose which monster spawns so play on a server which doesn't have wolves.

If you were on an uncharted island, would you be able to annihilate wood with your bare hands, create a full set of wooden and stone tools, get coal with WOODEN TOOLS, create torches by shoving a stick into a lump of coal, create a door by putting 6 BLOCKS OF WOOD ON ONE SINGLE LITTLE DESK THING CALLED A CRAFTING BENCH which magically gives you a door with a little window at the top half, create a WORKING FURNACE made of STONE, a double chest, a cake, windows, and build a house; all in 8 minutes?
Exactly.
All of those are unrealistic, I admit, but at the same time, these wolves are taking away from the only bit of difficulty MC had left.
Every game has things that aren't realistic, you could have made a post 10x that length (thank God you didn't), but none of those things you named off will follow you around killing the only things that provide real danger in the game.
Lava isn't included because you can carry around a bucket of water and never have to worry about it again.
It's not fully about how realistic it is (which still has some impact), it's about how it would change the game.
PS: Will everyone please stop using the damn "don't use it" line? I figured if I put it in the OP not to use it, then you wouldn't. Please read the OP before you make a post.

No but seriously, it's a valid argument. It's a sandbox game, not a game with a set objective. You can play it how you want, some people might want to play with wolves, some might not. They're fairly rare so you won't see them often. So once again, don't use (or in this case, tame) it.
It's like saying "I think that driving is unnecessary as transportation is fine the way it is! DON'T SAY CARS ARE FASTER!!" I know, it's a completely different topic but my point stands.
So... how many pages of the thread did you read?

You mean this...
Anyway, I'm quite fond of wolves. Yeah, they can be tamed and attack mobs, but look at the wiki. 1 1/2 hearts. That equals in # of hits...

woah, woah ,woah. Stop! CUT!
There is a serious issue here. Minecraft SSP can be played 1 of 2 ways:
1) Creative: play on peaceful, build stuff, and sometimes use INVedit
2) Survival: play on a difficulty other than peaceful, no INVedit hacks, try to survive with natural materials, *let dogs protect you*.
*denotes after the 1.4 update*
My friend, whether the game is easy or not, the game is normally about survival.
2. If you don't like forever lasting torches and want there to be danger, knock them down.
3. If you don't like the way Portals to the Nether allow you to travel long distances, don't build them.
Or you can do both in the same world. Stop trying to tell people what is what.
Sleekcraft! Check it out!
That's how much they hit for idiot... :sleep.gif:
