I'd like to see landing-based falling damage. Sand would do less damage than smoothstone upon landing (sources: I would only ever jump from 3 meters into sand) for one. Not sure about things like gravel (ever skinned your knee? gravel's a *****), but wool would definitely be soft. Maybe bouncy beds?
Okay, 200 feet falls are usually fatal, yes, but there are several cases of people falling out of airplanes and surviving.
If you really need me to, I will list off several of the people who have done it.
One of which I believe even talked to the Mythbusters, because they did something about a person surviving a 20,000+ foot fall.
One woman survived because she fell into a fire ant nest.
The stings kept her from going into shock and dying. Eventually, she managed to get help.
She's still alive. Don't know if she's in a wheelchair, or if she can even move much, but she survived the fall.
So, yeah, falling usually kills you. But it's not a 100% guarantee.
People have survived being shot in the head, so nothing is really 100% guaranteed to kill you.
One man survived both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He died early last year.
This concludes David's factoid program. We now return you to this thread.

Wow, I cannot belive the number of people that didnt really get the thread...
I KNOW You cant die from a fall of 4 blocks directly (It only takes half a heart), point begin is, you can actually do If you suffered damage of 9 and half heart before... So yeah, that IS actually diying from a 4 blocks fall... Its simple

Um... I think I will skip the part of where I ask why the hell did you quote this and will proced to WTH¿?
Yeah, falling from 4 meters can hurt, ESPECIALLY if you don't crouch as you land.
Imagine, if you would, falling from 12-13 feet while keeping your legs straight the entire time? I think I'd lose half a heart easy. Might be a good idea for Notch to make it so if you crouch right when you hit the ground, you get decreased fall damage from that fall.
Sometimes I do wonder why the Minecraft guy gets hurt from a 4 block fall, especially considering he's 2 blocks high.
It certainly doesn't look that high in-game.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I've always found that landing on leaves seems to reduce fall damage. When jumping from ridiculous heights, I always aim for a tree.

For real? Well, somebody got to test this (Or I will do it myself!).
I think the idea is you break your legs and suffer so much you die.
Detailed Version:
You jump off of a 4 metre fall, hit the ground and feel the bones in your leg shift. You attempt to do this again and each time you feel it more. On the 20th time your bones in your legs shift so much they go out of socket through the skin on your knee. You are left there stranded with broken legs and cannot move, therefor commit suicide so you do not have to suffer any more pain.

Um. Yeah, thats cool and makes sence...
In fact, If I rememeber correctly, there WAS a bone breaking sound before...

Because, for whatever reason, my response didn't stay in the message. So I will reiterate it here:
You're asking why a guy who is already 95% of the way to a fatal wound is killed by falling 4 meters? THERE's your "WTH".
This.
The guy is already stammering around, only half a heart. Blood pouring from his wounds, choking back the bile from the horrible pain he is enduring. I'd say a 4 meter drop when you are barely conscious, aware, and in no physical condition to be falling would certainly finish you off..
Edit: It's not like we're talking about a completely healthy Steve here. You have to take the other factors into consideration. If he did die just from falling 4 meters with full health or hell even 1/2, then there'd be an issue.

What does this have to do with anything?
That is so very close to being sig worthy. lol

Bad physical fitness? you should crouch when you land.

If he wasn't alive, do you think he'd be posting about it?
