I've made a new world, and I live in a house in a...beachy biome, or a swamp or something. This means I live near reeds, and since I think books are useless, I want to make sugar, and in turn, make cakes!
However, chickens laying eggs are a rarity where I live, mostly cows and sheep. So whenever I see a chicken, I follow it around for a while...at least till it lays an egg. This hasn't worked out well, it's usually night before anything happens.
(Keep in mind this is a new world, and I haven't discovered Diamond yet, and Iron is a rarity. Dungeons, however, are plentiful. I've taken down 3 so far.)
So I used my smartness to make a Chicken Trap / Coop. This didn't work, because my previously mentioned smartness is a lie. I then thought "Chickens disappear after a while, so I'd have to keep an eye on them, but they're hard to control and manipulate"
After a quick ponder, I decided to use my own house as a trap, or coop for a chicken. So I crafted a fishing pole, and grabbed a nearby chicken, and reeled it into my house, and I have the chicken in my house, using the fishing pole as a leash. I have a few questions regarding if this'll work.
1. Can Chickens lay eggs alone?
2. Can Chickens lay eggs while on a "leash"?
3. Can Chickens lay eggs when you're standing close by?
4. Can Chickens lay eggs on stone floor?
If you can answer these for me, I'll be hugely thankful, and full of cake. Thanks!
EDIT: It just laid it's first egg. I'm so proud. I'm becoming quite attached to this chicken. It think I might let him stick around as a pet.
I think the answer would be "yes" to all of those questions. If I'm not mistaken (which I could be) they lay eggs at random intervals, with no real factors affecting it. They do despawn though- I tried trapping a few once, came back a day later, and they were all gone.

No doubt they wouldn't stick around, however, if I were to watch it closely, like... 2-7 blocks away, it wouldn't disappear before my eyes, would it?
EDIT: Another question, I might add it to the OP, but does...fish pole-ing a chicken damage it?
I don't want to un-leash, and re-leash only to kill it by accident.
Since that chicken is my pet now, I have a few more questions.
1. What's an appropriate name for a pet chicken? (I want something legit, not Clucky or some crap)
2. What do chickens eat; Fish, Wheat, Bread or Pork Chops. I've been giving it bread. I want my pet well fed.
3. At what distance do chickens disappear. I have no one to look after my chicken while I'm gone, so there's much less sleeping, mining, or farming. I care about him, good ol' #12925.

That's a cool name! If only my chicken was a pirate, Pablo the Pirate is a bad-ass name.
No wonder he wasn't finishing his fish-finger sandwich.
I mean, we only became friends so I could eat his babies with sugar, milk and wheat. I don't think my morals agree with me. I would hate to see him see his babies being eaten...
Fishing rods don't do any damage, even though it seems like it when you hit a mob with them.
like snowballs and eggs?
because i've killed something with it before i think...
edit: checked the wiki, aparently it doesn't
1.Snowballs and eggs hurt enemies. It takes about 70-ish (Or was it 120-ish?) snowballs too kill a cow, sheep, or pig(5 hearts). 70/5 (Or 120/5) = 14 (or...24) which means its 14 (ugh again? or 24) snowballs too deal 1 heart of damage. And back on topic, The answer too all of your questions are yes.

1. Have a legit name? Wut. So If i name my chicken clucky I'm cheating? What the hell.
2. Air.
3. I think somewhere around 150 blocks.
Mobs can vanish at... just under 40 blocks away. 32-38, I can't recall. That doesn't mean they will, just that they can. They will despawn at 128, if they're still loaded when the despawner gets to them. If they unload entirely, they'll stick around until they reload.

I don't THINK so, but it's possible. I've had stuff like creepers that I swear just vanished for me. Best way to try it is to experiment a bit.

With a plan like this, I have gotten over 6 stacks of eggs. Of course, - the eggs I threw to get the chickens to spawn.
I mean, we only became friends so I could eat his babies with sugar, milk and wheat. I don't think my morals agree with me. I would hate to see him see his babies being eaten...
I might take a few more eggs, and set him free.
I threw all my eggs, but to no avail. Pablo seems more aggressive to me, I don't think he appreciates me killing his sons and daughters.
