I believe that bricks are becoming less and less popular as Minecraft continues to grow. In the earlier versions of when the game had limited building blocks, bricks were often used for building. But right now I RARELY see people use bricks in survival mode. The only time i see them in survival is when people are trying to build chimneys. I know that people still use bricks a lot but I don't see a lot people doing so. I can say this for other things, such as paintings and fireworks. But clay has been in longer than those. But still more people prefer stained/hardened clay (since we have a mesa biome)

I personally have never been a fan of bricks, I used little if not any. Even back in beta, I preferred just using stone or other materials over them. Idk why, I haven't found them to be appealing.
I like them but like all other building blocks, I prefer them in certain situations. A couple of recent things I've used bricks for are the cellar for my modded game's house--all the walls in the cellar were brick:
And a small 3-story survival house that I originally made in MCPE and remade in creative, using regular brick with nether brick and stone brick:
I mainly use bricks for smaller details in my builds. I don't think bricks generally look that great when used as the main block in a house. Not to mention that building a brick house is especially tedious. According to my calculations, creating a stack of brick blocks uses 4 times as much coal as a stack of hardened clay. (8 coal x 64 clay = 16 brick blocks.)

I personally love the look of bricks I made a giant house on the server I visit out of them. With a nether brick roof and quartz placed in certain places it looks quite nice. I think the problem is that other building blocks are much easier to come by, to build that house I had to find a swamp and make a temporary base there to mass harvest the clay. I think that clay should be obtained from dirt somehow as it is in real life. Perhaps 2x2 dirt in inventory/crafting table yields one clay ball. This would give you plenty and give a use for the countless stacks of dirt you accumulate throughout the game.

Never been a fan of bricks, it's probably my most hated texture in the game, probably because it's such a loud texture, if it wasn't so bold and bright, I think it would work better with other blocks, but in it's current form it doesn't.
Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever used bricks in any of my builds.
Personally I find them fun to use, however at the cost of having to find them all is a bit of an issue. At 1/4 yield per 64 stack, I would need four stacks in order to have a single stack of Bricks. And that is just bricks, not if I wanted to use slabs or stairs. With how limited clay is, it makes thinking ahead for building a bit of a chore.
However wit an enchanted fortune shovel, it becomes a lot easier to manage, however you are sacrificing levels and time in order to get clay for bricks. My opinion? Make clay more available.

Fortune has no effect on clay, which always drops 4 clay balls per clay block no matter what, or it would be ridiculously OP (see first comment here), just as glowstone never drops more than 4 (and not even guaranteed to drop 4).

Same. I personally just hate shoveling clay underwater and having to constantly surface for air.

I usually build Houses out of stone bricks or wood. I only use bricks for roofs or decorations, but i usually use slabs for that.
Oh well, that's just me.

Back from the End, time to rebuild.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
