This would be a godsend. I got a second copy of minecraft for my wife only to find out that she gets sick after a few minutes of playing with the camera spinning around so much. Games where she can zoom the camera out, she can handle.
If this ever happens we'll have something besides WoW to play together!
Turning 'head bob' off didn't help? Bummer. I'd give 6 diamonds if my wife was a gamer. sigh.

I don't think the over-the-shoulder style of TPC would work all that well. On the surface, maybe, but how would it work underground in caves? Unless all your corridors are at least 2 or 3 blocks wide, the camera would be clipping through the walls or stuck looking at the face texture like the current camera works when you're too close to a wall.
This thread is still here? I've been thinking about a few things:
I for one would love a nice 3rd person, but it's difficult to implement, because a lot of the time your head is basically touching the ceiling. It'd be tough to decide exactly where to put the camera in those instances.
I'll give this idea support (possibly a mod one day? I'm no modder unfortunately) but I think it has to be more specific first. For instance, what are some specific ways to make the 3rd person view more playable, and how would they work?
One of my favorite experiences with a 3rd person camera was in Wind Waker. One of the reasons was that you could hold forward on the control stick and use the c-stick to essentially "steer Link in the correct direction".
You can kind of do that already when you're on a boat in Minecraft, but it has a couple of control differences that make boats a little hard to steer.
I don't think that the 3rd person view will be improved very much and I think there might be a controls problem since the mouse is used to aim as well as change camera angle, but a girl can dream.

WOAH, WAIT. Our eyes take pictures? Please tell me I can recover these pictures from another person.
You have to stick a thumb drive up their nose, drag and drop the pictures onto it, and then load them through your ear.
NO JUST NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Please, for the sake of Notch, don't add this.
EDIT: Let me explain why I hate this.
The third person view in the vanilla minecraft is completely playable for me.
And i've played games that you say have better third person views, and in fact I don't like them.
I think the Third Person view is like in Morrowind or Oblivion, it's pretty pointless but it lets so see your character for bit, but yeah I agree it would be cool to make it usable.
I'd love some 3rd person view support. Would be nice to get a good view of our player "skins" outside of the inventory menu.

Ghasts will shoot at the camera instead of the character. Dunno if this was fixed recently or not.
