So I was playing on my server and in my house on the server I trapped Villagers using the method of trapping and curing zombie villagers. I had the villagers encased in the wall (if you can picture them in the image below) and when I was at my farm, which is very close to my house, I came back and all the villagers had disappeared.
I am really confused as to why they all went missing. I tested it and if any zombies try to hit them through the holes in the wall they can't. It is lit up enough so nothing can spawn down the hallway and the door was closed. I searched the forums but nothing really fit my situation. If anyone knows why this happened or if this has happened to anyone else, please let me know.
They could've despawned if the villager's don't go with the "can walk 20 blocks in all direction" rule. I'm not sure if they do or don't, so I guess I'll do some research about that Also, spiders could've gotten them.

I've gone much further away from them before and they stayed I wasn't too far away either when they went missing. Also I think spiders need two wide gaps right?
Maybe an admin was in vanish mode and used the killall command (admins forget that killall doesn't just kill hostile mobs, it also kills every mob across the map)

Perhaps someone did do a /killall? It could also be a glitch, too. Servers can be pretty glitchy sometimes. How long did you stay 200+ blocks away from them for?

Usually a while just when I go adventuring out. It definately wasn't a killall because I own the server and I never did that.

Does nobody ever learn to make lemonade out of lemons? You should use this as the plot of a Herobrine story.
(It helps if you read this in a steriotypical australian accent)"I am a zombie curer. Those that aren't far gone, I can save them. It isn't the best line of work, but seeing the lights in the eyes of those once taken is some pretty inspiring stuff. One day, however, in the lab, I noticed that all of the subjects were missing. At first I was terrified that they had escaped. Upon further inspection, however, there was OMG HYPER-REALISTIC BLOOD leading into the next room. Weary as ever, I pulled out my sword and crouch-walked into the next room. THEN I SAW STEVE AND HIS HEAD DID A 360 AND HE DIDN'T HAVE ANY EYES AND HE STARTED STABBING ME AND HYPER-REALISTIC BLOOD WENT EVERYWHERE AND THEN I WENT INTO THIRD PERSON AND REALISED THAT I WAS HEROBRINE THE WHOLE TIME OMG PLOT TWIST111111~

Villagers don't despawn. Ever. They can wander off and get lost, trapped in a cave, stuck in a hole, glitch into the wall and suffocate, or be eaten by zombies, but they do, not, despawn. I'd say the most likely answer to OP's situation is that a baby zombie somehow got in there, and killed them all. Baby zombies can fit through a 1x1 hole, so if one did manage to get in there, they'd all be sitting ducks.
Also, I've never heard of a "can walk 20 blocks in all direction" rule. In fact, I'm not even sure what you mean by that...are you perhaps referring to how hostile mobs will despawn randomly after they've been more than 32 blocks from the nearest player for at least 30 seconds? That doesn't apply to villagers, or passive mobs in general. Only hostiles, bats, squids, and ocelots (none of which are technically "passive" mobs in the game code) despawn.
Mm, no, mobs that cannot walk 20 blocks in any direction were told to despawn. That was a rule told by MC Producers, whether it still follows with the new updates is not something I've checked in with.

Yeah baby zombie is probably the explanation. I don't know how he got in there but yeah that's probably it. Thanks for the help!

When? I've never heard of this, is there somewhere I can read about it? It certainly hasn't been a feature of any recent version.
Most likely while you were traveling and exploring the villagers despawned, cause if u are not in the same chunk as them, they despawn.
No they don't; read the previous replies; I've also never had this issue even when traveling to another dimension (which will unload even spawn chunks, where I build my base/village, if no other players are in the Overworld, unless a chunk loader is used). However, I have seen villages suffocate and die after loading a world, just standing next to a wall (but not obviously in the wall) and taking damage (MC-2025), and as others said baby zombies can get through 1 block high openings, and the OP said they tested to make sure zombies couldn't get them, suggesting that they had no other protection for them (whenever you find a naturally generated village your first priority is to wall it in and light it up - or it won't last long at all, even on Easy).

I was alone on the server when they went missing.
Exactly how far away was "not too far away"?
You can just call me Canary.
How not to look like a total fool in the forum games
I was in another room in my house roughly 30-40 blocks away. But I have gone 200+ blocks away and they stayed.
It's my server.

Village Mechanics: A not-so-brief guide - Update 2017! Now with 1.8 breeding mechanics! Long-overdue trading info, coming soon!
You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
