well im sure this thread has been posted before but i dont see one so lets revamp.
the perpose of this thread is to find out peoples methods of mining , do you follow the generic mining route or do you be daring and dig down like a boss or do you dig a giant 100x100 hole to bedrock , lets find out.
me personally i dig a stair case down to bedrock , go to level 12 and dig a horizontal line that goes VERY far , it made my world 20 mb bigger i traveled that far , i then turn left/right and mine that direction and rinse and repeat.
after about a month with my world pretty much everything under the surface land is hollow , i like mining.
you can also post screenshots of your mining system to show people new method
I prefer a style similar to Shreeyam's, but I dig it much wider, more of an actual quarry mine that leads into four 3X3 tunnels. This is primarily just because I find it attractive, and because I love having a minecart track wide around the walls from the ground level up.
How does anyone live without Zombe's Minecart mod?

My Grandmother passed away on Sunday, the 7th of August, 2011. I am taking an extended leave of absence in light of this. My apologies.
I do a mixture of standard branch mining and deep cavern exploration. I always haul out far more on the cavern explorations, going through less picks in the process, without massive amounts of stone, but its dangerous and tends to take a significant period of time for long expeditions. I kind of keep things varied by doing both.
i can't be limited by the blockiness of the minecraft world... my tunnels rarely follow the cardinal directions, i like to find a corner of a square room (so im facing, for example, northeast), and i mine out a 7 block square, take a step down, and repeat... this requires very minimal mouse movement, since you're aiming at the point where 3 blocks intersect.
Im not sure how efficient this is from an ore finding standpoint, but the tunnels look round, and more realistic than a 2x2 square staircase
My 63x63 strip mine is just to get cobblestone. This is probably the most ineffective in getting specific ores, but it does a good job of getting me cobblestone
Going to a different part of the map, I have a tunnel straight down with platforms about every 8 blocks. This is my branch mine that is more inclined towards the acquiring of specific ores.
Then on a different part of the map, I have a natural deep mine. With this, I just have to run around and search for the already exposed minerals. Makes it 20 times easier, but these are fairly rare and often are no where close to my little civilization i've built.
Then, close to level 12, I'm building my vertical maze. This is more of a clear out the crap mine, so I carefully smooth out all the blemishes, get rid of the gravel, generally take a lot more care to make it look decent.
MOD EDIT: Saying this is unnecessary and rude. If people are willing to discuss it, let them discuss it. There's a whole wide world of other topics you could explore and contribute to that you might even be interested in! How exciting!

I have a branch mine. I like it though, because there's only one main trunk. I have to have a minecart track with stations along the way because it takes ages to walk from one end of my mine to the other now. I also dig out all the dirt and gravel and explore any caves I find while mining. I never seal anything off either, just light it up with a bazillion torches. And I use wooden planks to make any scaffolding need to get around in the mine, 'cause I think it makes the whole thing look cooler.
