See, the very first thing I did with a bed in Minecraft was made a loft specifically for my bed. It's just a simple loft with a ladder up to it, but I have yet to have zombies attack me there.
Now on the floor in a cave with no lights or door... that's another story.

Eh, I'm really skeptical about people's "totally safe rooms."...
If you want a pic of my room, here
tiny, probably only 5x5. And it is not visible, but the entrance on the left hand side has a door which is closed. The room is completely lit and "enclosed." This is what I am trying to convey, that this is clearly a glitch. Of course, I understand what you mean about these people's dark rooms. Basically, I want to show you and everyone that this is a condition in which the glitch occurs, and it's not a feature of the game.
The wiki stated that if a hostile mob has a clear path from its spawn to the bed, it will be put next to it and wake you. I tested it, I put a bed outside, waited for the baddies to spawn, and shure enogh, I was awakend. Then I slept in my house and I slept perfectly. There might be a bug that makes it think a mob has a clear path, yet its a sealed room. If it is a bug, (which I'm guessing it is) it will most likely be fixed later.
Just make sure your house is well lit, and is sealed. I kept getting woken up until I put a block over my stairway to the roof (which wasnt complete) and as soon as i did, i never got woken up again. It probably helps that my house is suspended over nothing with only stairs up, but even with that blockaded they got in until i sealed the room.

1. Which way did you place the door? Isn't there two ways for the door to be placed that will result in it being "closed" from your viewpoint?
Maybe the way you place the door is automatically set as "closed"... if you placed it before the wall was built, 90 degrees off, maybe you actually switch the door into an "open" state when you're closing it, and the game checks for and "open" state door.
2. I don't see any torches inside your house. Not that I can really see much in that picture. But if you're using indoor/outdoor lighting that shines through your windows, maybe the game first checks that you are enclosed, and then checks lighting levels based only on the torches in the room, and disregards light shining through windows.
I don't know... Just guessing. It can't be a totally easy thing for the game to accurately recreate the paths mobs could travel to your bed when it's just doing one quick check.

Could be glass.
