I wanted to have cobble below and wood above to make the outside of part of my base so it looked normal outside but the floor inside would be wood. You cannot combine half blocks of different types into the same block space. Does anyone else want this?
I agree, also I'd like if stone slabs looked just like half a stone block without the border.
with all the other half blocks things are lookin' pretty neat in my base though. lol
Yeah, no, two cobble slabs for some reason makes something identical to a cobble block but it breaks down into two half slabs, which does not make sense, and I hope it's changed.
Due to the way the half blocks are implemented this is troublesome to realize. Right now a half block and a double half block are two separate blocks. Whenever you place one half block onto another the original half block is simply replaced by the full block.
To allow combinations of half blocks a new block would need to be introduced for each possible combination.
There was a discussion about this in the suggestions forum a while back. Read that if you are interested (mostly conjecture as no Mojang employees participated).
<edit>A correction to post above.
Half blocks have been implemented as a metadata field on stone slabs. This means that there is only one block type for all half blocks. Full blocks already existed and each have their own type. To allow combinations of blocks a new block type needs to be introduced with a fairly large metadata field (especially if more half block types are introduced).
This is certainly possible but it raises some other questions such as "which tools are effective on such blocks?", "what kind of material properties does this block have?", "should it be allowed to have only upper half blocks?" etc.

Support the Allocator! Find my inventions such as my pressure plate removal detector on the About Me page of my profile.
I'm still looking for more feedback on my configurable Redstone Gate mod. All gates and common circuits (such as e.g. clocks, edge detectors, latches and Flip-Flops) in a single block.

They used 2 bits of metadata on and to indicate the type of block (see here). This causes the cobblestone double slab to be different from the cobblestone block.

We should have stairs made out of those things, too.

Awesome Idea!
I'd have Diamond stairs with gold in the middle, Something like:
= Diamond stair
= gold stair

Dirt half block, papa needs a new library roof.
