You may be able to sleep away the night, but if you venture out in the morning, you'll still have to watch your back for creepers. And cave-dwelling mobs don't discriminate whether it's day or night, so you'll have to prepare yourself there.
This man has a very good point.
I was in a thread a good few months ago where the idea of beds being implemented as spawn points was introduced (to my knowledge, since I regularly watch all the blogs/twitters/forums). In that thread, I was very much against the idea; simply because it seemed as though if somebody wished to use the bed in a certain fashion they could do all the fun "high-points" of the game on any difficulty without really having to worry about monsters. They could just place a bed down a few meters away from where they're mining so that creepers can't blow it up and completely mitigate any real danger those mobs would have posed.
However, I realized that I (along with a lot of the other people originally against the idea) were just being stubborn. I went into playing minecraft with the same mentality as I did all games: To win, and to be better than other people. Since in minecraft you don't have clear objectives, I always tried to challenge myself by taking away some of the "easier" mechanics of the game. It felt that much better when I completed a huge project on normal or hard rather than on peaceful, without food or torches.
But really, it doesn't matter. All I have to do now is say "Yup, I finished that on normal without any beds!" I get the same sense of satisfaction and ego-flexing while the guy who plays the game more casually can still have his addition and enjoy it.
I feel bad for being so inconsiderate for other people's playstyles. Live and learn, I suppose.
Yes the last bed you sleep in if you die you will be there, and it will also let the night time go away.
Wait. So if I die during the night, it respawns me on the bed after night has passed (speeding it up, of course)? If that's the case, then what happens to my items if I drop them? Would they disappear, or is the timer on dropped items in real-time?
Edit: Wow, nevermind. Misread the post. My bad guys. :x
I wish the beds would work like the ones in fallout:new vegas, I mean, how about US NOCTURNAL PLAYERS!!! I wish the bed would allow you to sleep from dawn to dusk or vice versa instead of this sleep til dawn thing. I want a way to skip the day so when I feel the urge, I can go rambo and start massacring all them hostiles...
Darnit Mojang, FIX IT!!!
As others have said before, if you don't want a bed, don't craft it. Confirmed by Jeb, you can still get attacked in your sleep. If you're out exploring and you see the sun setting, you can't just plop down a bed a head on out. When (and if) it sets your spawn point, that will be extremely useful for people with worlds in the double digits, if they're working on a new project and they die, they wouldn't need to traverse the entire way again.

Describing Minecraft is like describing orgasms...
Even Science cant do it
I think the complaints about making survivor easy are from people that don't want survival mode. They want the ADVENTURE MODE that Notch once promised would be in the game eventually. Survival mode isn't supposed to be some kind of ultra hardcore mode. That's what adventure will be. Survival, by virtue of being able to move blocks, has way too many cheats to ever be the kind of challenge some want it to be.
All that aside, even if beds only set a spawn point, I would be eternally thankful. That's really the one big thing currently holding the game back. You have to build almost right on your spawn. If you don't get a cool starting area, too friggin bad.

I didn't think of it bringing you straight to dawn when you nap. Cool beans.
