According to your experience does Iron ore tend to appear close to coal or is it just my imagination?
Also, on a slightly different note, my brother is playing a separate minecraft file and he seems to find IRON much more often than i do. I never have enough and often resort to stone tools to get by, while he's building minecarts and tracks.
Furthermore, I spend way more time playing than he does. And I branch mine while he kinda just hacks away at whatever hits his fancy. In conclusion, im just bitching. shoulda gotten addicted to heroin.

Yes but if i did that then the whole point of minecraft would be nullified. If I wanted unltd blocks id play creative.

Iron isn't any more common around coal, it's random, though mining coal does expose more rock, which means you do have a chance of finding iron you couldn't see.
And once again, finding iron is random. Make sure you are looking below sea level to find your iron. I've had games where I find stacks of the stuff, and games where iron tools are a rare thing. Even with lots of iron though stone is your goto material for most tools, iron isn't that much better, and you can get an infinite amount of stone.
And if you have trouble getting coal, smelt log blocks into charcoal.
Coal veins sometimes merge into Iron ores. So there might be a chance for you to find iron behind a vein of coal. Well that is what I find all the time. Look for caves under sea level, They have a high chance of holding iron +_+.

Does Notch care if you don't play Minecraft how it was supposed to be like? I think not.
Who's this Notch you speak of?
Seriously, I just like mining things. Thats what makes it a game instead of just an editor.

Spelunking. Believe it or not, the best way to find iron (arguably) is just go find a random cave and explore. Wastes less material too. Of course, for diamond, branch mining is the way to go (also arguably). Just find a cave and just have fun, don't worry about what you find, it's the adventure and threat of getting lost that makes it fun. Just bring swords, a bow, food, and lots and lots of wood! And don't bother that much with iron tools. Just make one or two for mining valuable ore.

No you didn't, because TNT damage doesn't stack.

No, coal is just all over the place once you start digging. The only reason that it seems like iron and coal occur close together is because coal is close to everything.
I've checked on Cartograph and other mapping software, and I've found that some areas seem to have a little more resources than others. Mountains and forested areas seem to have the best resources. Deserts seem to have the least. But that's just in my experience. For the most part, it hardly matters at all--especially in the long run.
If he's finding more coal and iron than you, but you're spending more time, he's probably just exploring a lot. It's easier to run around the world finding good coal spots than it is to make a base arbitrarily, then say THERE BETTER BE COAL UNDER IT! and start mining. Also, make sure you're mining at the right level. If you're not just under the surface--or very close to bedrock--you probably won't find a lot of stuff. I seem to find a lot of dead space between the initial coal and iron you usually find on the surface and the rich, wonderful layer close to bedrock. If you've got a branch mine, I'd say go for layers 8-16.

This. I have a branch mine with about 100 shafts, each 50 blocks long, 2 blocks high and I found maybe 3 stacks of iron over a week of work or so. Then just tonight I went spelunking and found a stack of iron in maybe 15 minutes.
And just the opposite, I've gotten maybe 10 diamonds total from spelunking where as I have a stack of diamonds from my branch mine.
If you want to get a fair share more materials be suspicious of any time you find an ore with only two blocks. There are most likely more at a diagonal. This has given me a modest boost in iron collecting and any number of diamonds is a very significant boost to that.
Spelunking is much better if you're in chunks with high cave density. Generally if you can spot two or three caves near the surface it's a real worm works down to the bedrock. If you do actually map out some smallish caves where you suspect high density just dig some stairs down through them with a few peepholes in the walls here and there.
My best luck with iron's always been caving. The lower the better, especially just above diamond levels, although this "technically" shouldn't be possible. ;p Also, if you find one ore, mine the adjacent stone too. My experience with iron (and only iron) is that the veins usually aren't one solid mass. o_O;

Connect Four: Possibly the best idea in the history of Minecraft. Sand and gravel I assume?
Guess I'm just gonna have to keep digging. I dont happen upon natural caverns either. I dunno, my world is ****ing weird. Thanks for all the feedback.

Okay, then use BiomeTerrainMod and increase the density of ores.

That's what I told my friend, and he said there were no redstone or minecarts in Creative. Sneaking is a biggie too.
