I'm just curious to how everyone does this. When you guys make a new world, do you just go with a random seed and hope for the best? And if so, if you get a crappy seed or just a mediocre one, do you bite the bullet and deal with it?
Or do you just search on this forum or other site for a well-presented seed beforehand?
In my previous world, the seed is randomly generated and my world is very ugly (I deleted that world already). Spawn point is near an entire 4000 blocks of frozen wasteland (Ice Plains) and there is nothing to see there. You would have to travel 10000 blocks to find a Desert or Mesa (I look at Amidst).
In my current world, I made sure that I use a good seed. I spawn near a Witch Hut (I've always wanted to experiment with farming Witches 'cause I haven't built a Witch farm before before). I have different biomes around me and not just one large clump of same biomes.
I use a random seed like 60-70% of the time. If I don't then I use the same seed that I used before (I usually play on xbox and only make a new world after the new updates and the seed changes) I use the same same because it just makes me feel nostalgic. Otherwise if I am looking for something in particular, like flat plains to build a town or mountains for a dwarven stronghold then I look for a seed with that.
I have only created 2 worlds to date after playing the game for 16 months or so. Both random (the latter is "Large biomes") and stuck with what I got.
For me it is fun to start a world and have to really work for finding new and exciting stuff, like a real adventurer who doesn't know what will be in the horizon up ahead, and for that reason I have avoided AMIDST and other tools with similar features.
The first world I created spawned me on a jungle beach, this is the world where I learned the game mechanics and whatnot, I have travelled quite a bit and set up bases in desert village, swamp, another jungle far away, etc. My second world spawned me in Savannah plateau mountains. My main base is there near spawn but I have branched out to a few new places, my main residence for a while has been a plains village I found about 1200 blocks from spawn. I plan to move to the extreme hills I found a while ago, create elevators up the mountains, suck the resources out of the cave systems below, build some snow themed houses for a base.
I just really enjoy the adventuring side of the game.
I personally almost always use a random seed, unless I need a specific seed for a project I'm doing, in which case I'll go and look for a good seed that has what I'm looking for. If I'm not working on a project, and just want to play in a survival world, I'll go and make a world with a random seed and just see what I get. I'll more often than not use the terrain and surroundings to build whatever it is I want to build.
Usually, when I create a new world, I don't use any seed. Sometimes, I will use a random seed that I come up with in my warped excuse of a brain (something like "knights" or "give me lotsa redstone"), but I have yet to search for an actual seed and use it to get specific terrain.

Forums avatar from the Chroma Hills resource pack:
I used a randomly generated seed for my first main world (-123775873255737467, default in 1.6.4 or earlier), which turned out to be pretty good for me (spawn in a plains biome next to a village (mostly in a lake but not too hard to fill in), in the middle of a large continent away from oceans (pre-1.7), huge cave systems (also pre-1.7)).
I've since reused the same seed several times, but with various mods to world generation; my current world is totally unrecognizable aside from landmasses/ocean, as different as 1.7 vs 1.6; note that when I modded world generation that I used different seeds for testing so I don't see what the seed I'm going to use looks like (this is also one reason why I decided to stop using Rei's Minimap as it can show unexplored caves; I want finding new caves to be a surprise, similarly, I only use Unmined to view what I've already explored).
On my current world I used the date I created it, as a seed. I spawned in a taiga biome and decided to stick with it, To date, it's my longest played world. I'm a habitual restarter usually. I start out liking a seed and I get bored so easily I go onto the next one.
I usually go through YouTube videos (top X seeds videos, for example) and find one that I like. I usually stick with that seed throughout that version of MineCraft.
However, I sometimes will type in my own seeds to see what I get. I usually have a theme to them such as old-school arcade game titles or band names. I've gotten some interesting worlds from them, but nothing worthy of a seed spotlight of some kind. I do note down the seeds which give nice results, though. For example, the seed "Primo Victoria" (without the quotes) gives an okay spawn area by my standards. (For those who don't know, that's the name of an album and its eponymous song made by the metal band Sabaton.)
I used to use random seeds, but it always became kind of a hassle. I'd go through several worlds just to find an okay spawn area.
Now that I either seek out or deliberately try to discover seeds, I feel like I have more control over what I get; I like that.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I do the same thing. Though sometimes I use strange characters, in hopes that will make a seed more unique somehow. I'll spam something in like...

A random seed could really bone you sometimes. A biome or item you really need might could end up never generating.
When my server restarted we decided to go through dozens, possibly hundreds, of seeds and find one that was really super interesting.
When I do some map making I use Amidst to find a good seed with biome distribution.
When I just want to waste some time and play survival for a little bit I generate a random seed and "bite the bullet"
