For those who have been having trouble making some sort of squid grinder and yet still want large quantities of black ink, you may have tried to gather wild squid from the endless oceans. This tends to be an exercise in frustration, since it is so damn dark down there.
Lightstone works, but it's not available in multi, and pumpkins work, but they're pretty rare, and you run the risk of having your pumpkin fly off in an unintended direction and having a difficult time finding it when you pick it up. And most people don't have enough pumpkins to light up the whole sea floor.
Finally I have hit upon the best solution to light up large areas of the sea floor with minimal effort and resources.
Step 1: Sink to the bottom, place pumpkin. You can see! Sweet.
Step 2: Place dirt column behind yourself
Step 3: Back up against the pumpkin and place a ladder against the top dirt block. Now you can breathe! Sweet.

Step 4: Stay backed up and place a ladder against the 2nd dirt block

Step 5: dig out the square beneath you. It has air!

[]
Step 6: Place a torch in your air square.
[]
[]
Step 7: Pick up your pumpkin and the top ladder, then repeat! If your pumpkin doesn't autocollect, you should be able to find it with the light from your torch.

With one pumpkin, a stack of ladders, and a stack of torches, you can light up a large area of sea floor and get ink fairly reasonably.

Does the light from the newly placed torches not affect the spawn rate of the squids? I've seen a lot of people say they only spawn in the dark, and the wiki doesn't say otherwise.

Squids will spawn in any light level, not just in the dark.
You can make 'floating' water beacons anywhere you want by stacking up or down to where you want it. Put another block in the space to be occupied by the torch, surround it with glass except the bottom. Break the block and put the torch in there.
I suppose I should have said jack-o-lantern and not pumpkin, sorry for any confusion that caused =)
As far as glassing in your torches - sure, you can, but this was the least resource-intensive solution I found. Also, since squid tend to be found along the ocean floor, light sources are probably not as necessary. Definitely a viable alternative though.
"Squid diving?"
Is that what you kids call it nowadays?
I lol'd. No wonder no one on here seems to be able to find any,

And I think that they do, I've seen them spawn in light areas (that are only two blocks deep) occasionally, so it can happen.

Also teh quickest way to breathe underwater is to place a door. But if u want ur jackolantern bk youd still have to do the ladder (or sign) trick.
But online where pumpkins are rare, a door to start with is much quicker. Makes underwater bases easier to start (good place to hid ur stuffs too).

I rather use the place-door-and-torch-under method though
