We've all been in this situation, you have a pickaxe, you're mining and it is so close to being used up that it is practically useless. You could dig your tunnel with it, but it wouldn't look appealing to you, and you don't have enough torches, etc etc.
Why waste the few remaining swings the tool has? Bash a couple more blocks out of the way if you have any torches handy, or take the tool back with you, resupply, and switch to a new one after you've used this one up.
Dig a tunnel until it dies, patch the tunnel up, get a new one.
What's the point in filling in the tunnel you've just made?
I'll keep any tools I have, regardless of how much health they have. I usually will mine/gather until I'm bored (with diamond) or until the tool breaks (all tool types).
If I do have to keep a weapon will low life, next time I need it, I'll take it out along with a full health tool.
Patching it up meaning closing the entrance and keeping the resources I mined out of it :tongue.gif:
I was thinking about it and I agree with most of the other posters when it comes to all tools except swords. I won't put a sword that is red or that is about to break into my use-bar in my inventory. I might use it on cows during the day, but I would be worried that it would break when I was fighting a spider or creeper at night and I wouldn't have enough time to switch to a new one.

Death is one of the occupational hazards of mining [Diamond] near [Lava]

Well, that makes sense, but if you had a tool with only four uses, it'd be a very short 'tunnel' and you'd have to be incredibly lucky to find stuff in it!
Even if I don't find anything besides cobble, I'll still keep it. I never destroy any item I get, as they can all be used.

Yeah, nearly-dead swords are just used for clearing away leaves and retrieving underwater Jack-O-Lanterns (I've been playing TheWova's Adrift map :tongue.gif:)
Other than that, use it til it breaks. No sense in saving it.
I use up all of mine up until they die except my diamond tools and gold. For some reason I keep them until right when they are about to die, than not let them die. I do not know why.
I like using Iron armor over diamond for similar reasons. Diamond last long but the protection towards the end of it's life seems way drug out. Iron degrades at a sweet spot for me when it comes to armor, diamond almost seems wasteful. As far as tools go, I use them till they break in my hand.
kill it in my hand, or uncerimonously throw it into a cactus. unless i feel a special bond to it, then i put it in the chest of memories, or give it a military send-off. u have no ritual buttin in yer voat!1!!11eleven! my armee uv 1 use diamond tewlz will kontinuee to torment u unteel u fix!1!!1

Throwing it away before it dies is like giving away a book when you still have twenty pages left to read.

I nevuh disruhspect mah feller tools.
If I don't have a replacement, I'd just make a crafting table and make my own.
