And then there's the other 90% of people in the world who actually like to discuss why things are broken instead of putting on a blindfold.
Then enlighten us; why is it broken? It's a lot easier for me to set up a tree farm than it is to hunt for skeletons. And instantaneous tree growth is useful for building and stuff.
Four words, which the OP already wrote more or less.

On that note, I'm not gonna even waste the effort or time to respond to any idiot who is just gonna say. "If you don't like it, don't use it." If i was working with a designer and that was their answer to evaluating how something is, I'd probably fire them, that's about as lazy ass as you can get. Please provide meaningful discussion or click the back button. Other then that, by all means! I love to discuss the pros/cons to each thing.
My opinion: Personally i think the only nerf it'd need is either: Make it not grow plants instantly, or make alot less bonemeal per bone, maybe 1:1. As of now it just made easy crap even easier. On wheat its not a big deal, its more that it piles up and makes tree farming even more of a joke then it already is. For the sake of not screwing people out of dye though i think i should just speedup plant growth instead of it being instant.. vs nerfing the bonemeal per bone.
Thank you! I also hate the "If you don't like it, don't use it" unless it relates to mods/plugins.

Charcoal was a great addition because I hated having to sit in the first night just to wait to do stuff. But bonemeal which makes stuff grow instantaneously is just boring.
Try bone meal on an underground tree farm, it sometimes takes a few to make it grow if the tree wants to grow larger than the ceiling. That should be the normal, like a random chance it instant growing the tree. As for the wheat, I think it should just advance it one step, not instant grow it.

I'm in favor of reducing growth time instead of having instant growth. I know it's a sandbox game and all, but I personally like to have things a little realistic (inb4 "Minecraft isn't supposed to be realistic!"). If bonemeal makes trees grown instantly then why not have it instantly produce 4-6 logs when used? It's basically the same thing in that context, minus some axe wear and tare. Having it cut down tree growth makes more sense.

The unrealistic part is that no matter how long they take to "grow", trees instantly turn from a sapling into a full-sized tree.
As a consequence, the problem with having bonemeal simply reduce the time a sapling needs to grow is that 1) it's already random and 2) there's no feedback on when a tree is going to grow, or if it tries to grow but fails so the random counter gets reset.
So you'd never know if the bonemeal is doing anything, which is important because if you use bonemeal and the tree tries to grow but can't*, it doesn't do anything. Telling if the bonemeal did anything or not, or if it's going to do something but the random time it picked was longer than normal (yet shorter than it would have been, not that you know that), would be impossible and annoying.
* Simple example: Place a column of blocks next to the sapling. This prevents the small tree algorithm, which is picked 90% of the time, from succeeding. So today you can spam bonemeal at a tree in this circumstance and it'll only have a 10% chance of working, assuming the big tree algorithm succeeds which isn't guaranteed.
Make it so that skeletons only have a chance to drop bones when killed by a sword/arrow.
that way you would have to work to get them, and mob traps and sun rise would not make the mobs drop them.
I'm on the side that its too unbalanced for minecraft that it grows trees instantly, but not about it working on crops.
but I believe my idea would make it a good balance.
Personally I never bother using bonemeal to grow things. I'm never in the situation where waiting is a big deal. The difficulty in growing things isn't the waiting, its the actual gathering, preparing, planting, and harvesting. Using bonemeal might remove the waiting but it adds extra gathering and application.

Still no infinite strongholds D:
I have a double chest full of bones from my dungeon spawner. I wouldn't mind a tweak that only speeds up a crops fertilization rate. I currently use the bone meal to finish off those last few crops that are growing to slow before I harvest me wheat farm, and in the past I would either wait, or just trash them. So they are already close to being done. Having an instant tree growth is especially useful for decorative trees. You might not want to wait ages for them to grow, just to grow wrong and have to cut down, re-plant and wait again.

My current save is on a tremendously large desert biome, and there was ONE tree at the start. Needless to say my first night was cold and dark. very dark. Next day I dug up some dirt and planted all of the saplings from that one tree. Bonemeal was the only way I could have gotten enough wood to survive the second night.
The unrealistic part is that no matter how long they take to "grow", trees instantly turn from a sapling into a full-sized tree.
Ahhhh, good point, I'd forgotten about that (I don't grow plants often). It is weird that way, and a way to get some sort of feedback on where the plant was growth-wise would be welcomed.
It is as simple as this: If you don't like it don't use it. Your opinion of somethings power in the game should in no way directly affect other peoples game play which is what you are after. I want everyone one else to play the way I do, is basically what you are saying, which is crap. The only thing that nerfing bonemeal would do is make it take longer to do things in minecraft which is a stupid suggestion. The game is fun, but quite time consuming as it is, anything that is going to allow me the same enjoyment with less time consumption should definitely remain in game, not be scaled back. To reinterate, all the things you find wrong with bonemeal can be averted by not using it.

Instantly. It can go from sapling to SUPER TREE in one second.
Keep it the way it is.

Step 2: Forget about it for a while.
Step 3: Harvest.
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit.
I've been spending WAY too much time on The Art of Trolling.
Crops and Tree's should take like.. 2-4 times as long to grow, so that bonemeal is used more as a necessity..
haha, I don't know what else to say?
It is called Survival mode for a reason.
And people on peaceful should have to wait ages cos they are manly enough or something stupid like that.
