Sorry if there is already a thread like this, I failed to find it
Anyway, when we first started playing minecraft, we all had ideas on what it would be like. Some of them were right, and some of them... not. Share your misconceptions here.
Mine:
I put the setting to peaceful, thinking it was an easier version of easy that still had mobs. When night came, I freaked out, dug a hole, and sealed myself in. When I noticed the lack of monsters, I went outside and stood on a tree until I realized I was on an island, then a chicken pushed me off an I panicked.
I believed that monsters only spawned on the mainland.
I thought that creepers could see through glass, would explode if they failed to find a route to you, and the sound of an explosion attracted other monsters.
Not much of a misconception but when I first played I made a hole in a mountain and then dug a path right down to the bedrock. The whole time I didn't come across a single cave or monster and only saw iron and coal. I thought that everything was like this and thought that this game was terrible because of that.
People still think that pumpkins show where dungeons are, even though it's been disproved countless times.
Edit: I, like most people, thought some of the nether noises that the ghasts spam at inordinate distances were actually the noises zombie pigmen make. They aren't. The pigmen are surprisingly quiet when they aren't hostile.
Lol, when I first played, I didn't know cacti couldn't be placed next to eachother, or other blocks, and I thought my game was glitched out.
Also, I dug straight down inside a cave, and fell into lava. I didn't know that lava destroys items so I kept going back into the lava to try and retrieve my items and get out before burning to death. lol, that was the dumbest thing I've ever done in minecraft.
People think you should never, ever dig a mineshaft straight down. If you stash all your stuff first besides a pick and some ladders, you won't lose much when you die :Lava:. It's more a matter of whether you're playing ironman/hardcore.
People think the hostile creature limit is still 200, which it was, back when.
I didn't listen to the cast myself where he talked about slimes, but I've read that he either said he "may have made them too rare", which could easily be a jokey way of saying they're not there, or "you won't find them." Anyway, they don't spawn; see thread in my sig for more.
When I first started I thought that wood blocks beat up trees faster than you bare hands. Then I realized that they didn't. But that's the worst that has happened to me. Don't know what you clowns are talking about with all these crazy misconceptions. Well, I did take about an hour or two to figure out that you had to hold down your mouse button... but that doesn't count. I hope.
My so-far misconception was that sand could also disobey gravity. I got proved wrong when I tried digging a cave in a desert. @.@ I have yet to find another one, though. =O
(Probably another one is if you dash too far out of reach from a ladder, you're going to fall and dieee.)
I also thought your items that you dropped when you die stay there until you pick 'em up... I guess that's wrong too. D:

Took me about 10 min to realize I had to hold the button.

Oh my god, me too.
I did the exact same thing. I bought the game, tried to own a tree and I'm like this game sucks!
Little did I know...
Hey. =D
