I've made a minecart system in a SMP server and it works about 70% giving a full boost, but the other 30% it won't give a full boost resulting in stopping halfway along the track or having only just enough speed to barely reach the end.
I have tried various boosters but so far I am convinced it is the lag that is causing the booster cart to reset faster than the cart carrying the player, and thus causing it to collide with the players cart and slow it down, causing a loss in speed.
(I'm currently using this style booster)
I have tried variations on this one, such as extending the loops so that the booster cart needs to travel a longer distance before resetting, and hopefully avoid it colliding with the main cart.
Has anyone had problems with boosters on multiplayer servers and is there a reliable booster that works?
I play offline, but the best I've found is 3 flat, then 2 sloping up. You have to make an extra flat piece at the top to make it slope, but then you just undo it. They only provide max boost if the cart is all the way against the block, & it doesn't seem like one slope is enough to push it all the way back. It also seems to work better if the block is stone & not dirt. This is only my experience, it may not work for everyone, I just thought I'd tell you what worked for me.

I blame Minecraft for the letters on my W, A, S, & D keys being completely gone.
He's asking about multiplayer. It doesn't work the same offline.
I've been having the same experience with boosters. It seems like the difference in host to server communication simply doesn't always cause the same glitched speed boost. I've had unfortunately little luck in finding a fix
Boosters were a glitch and partially fixed. I'd suggest to use Minecart Mania/CraftBook in SMP and put ores below the rails to give a boost. By default, it's gold ore/gold block.
I've had similar problems with a closely related cart holding area. After a couple hours, the carts get far enough out of sync with the world that it just breaks and they stop. I've also noticed boosts aren't always reliable, probably about 70% as you mentioned.
