Maybe cardinal direction should affect the likelihood of certain biomes. Like the farther north you go, the more likely you'll find snow and the farther south you go, the more likely you'll find desert. That would make it easier to find the biome you're looking for.

The earth doesnt work like that...if u live in the southern hemisphere and u go south its snow...if you go north its desert....you know? poles at both ends..
I spawned in a desert biome. I wanted a beach biome with a huge ocean next to it. Rather then walking forever, I deleted that world, and make new worlds until I got what I wanted. Took 2 minutes. Huzzuh.
spawned in a forest once and during the night had 15 creepers around my shack * 1 destroyed it while the others chase me and blew up the forest. First day I played minecraft too*

After 10:30 PST, my IQ drops to around that of a shovel, please disregard anything I say after aforementioned time, it will likely not make any sense, and is best ignored.
the crucial flaw is in your technique, since the world (as a previous reply stated) isn't polar so the rules don't apply. Instead of walking straight until you find what you are looking for you should have traveled in a ever widening spiral outward from your spawn, direction wouldn't matter plus your chance of encounter would go up by about 75% for whatever you were looking for, it doesn't matter.
I took an hour and 15 minutes of walking and swimming. 3 hours total for the round trip.
I took an hour and 45 minutes of walking and swimming. 4 hours total for the round trip and never found any snow.

I wanted wood.
I looked to the left.
Took me an hour and a half to finally figure out.
It wasn't a forest biome.
Huzzah
Mmm, were there candy trees and ice cream?
so I played the game for a week and created a kingdom....
