Recently, I lost about 15 iron pickaxes, 10 gold ore, and 50 redstone from lava while searching for diamond. I'm quickly learning that the stripmining/branch mining technique is extremely dangerous. Post any tips that you have for effectively mining diamond while staying alive. Thanks! I hope this thread will help others looking for diamond as well.

I just dig underground my house, then make a 4X4 room, then dig underground until I hit bedrock, after that I mine in two directions for about 20 blocks. I was able to found 8 diamond and a 86 pieces of redstone uses this method.
Also as a side tip, don't use ladders, they eat up wood. I take a few stacks of dirt, and use it to make my way up, to get down, I use shovels.
After dropping down a hole I opened up into a lava lake while branch mining, I now stand in one spot and mine 2-3 blocks forward, then advance and repeat. No more dropping down holes...and to find more diamonds, I agree with the above posters...go to bedrock then mine above it up to 16 levels or so.
Find a natural cave. Hope it's a really big/long one.
Yeah, that's one of the best ways finding alot of Iron, Redstone, Lava and Diamond.
Find a natural cave and hope for the best.
And as probably been told in this thread - you can just create a mining shaft in your house.
It's impossible that you wont find any diamond by creating a mining shaft and just dig down... down... and down.
Result: :coalore:, but when you're on the way to you shelter/house:
