Each time you get hurt, you need food. You can build bif stuff but I prefer small homes with everything included. I prefer to keep intact the landscape. Presently, I have a house 9x9 in wood.
If you want a simple pattern for food (bread), I use this one. 2 blocks height.
4 blocks maxi from the water... That's perfect ! Just put some torches on the walkway (one every two cases is enough). The roof can be made with glass, it's more efficient during the day. But it's not necessary.
4 x 8 x 2 deep (repeating as many times as you like)

You place dirt over your water trench to walk on... this way you can have a water current in your trench (as opposed to standing water) and not have to wade through it.... I think I saw someone make a youtube video with this strategy for farming but I promise you I figured this out before I saw that video.

Nice one ! Very small space and good production too !
Edit: is it easy to get the seeds? You are one block higher, I wonder if it's easy to farm without touching the wheat (otherwise, I've to till again)

To pick up the wheat and seeds you usually have to jump down off the walkway... but if you just jump back up it won't damage the tilled soil (unless you walk around on it). And by the way, if you sneak (hold down shift) it won't damage the crops anyway.
For a 'Farmland Block' (the block of farmland on which the hoe has been used to create a farmland block) to turn from dry to wet, a few rules apply:
The Farmland Block requires water at the same level, or one block above to hydrate. Water one block below will not work.
The Farmland Block requires water up to four blocks away, including diagonals.
Intervening materials, or lack thereof, between the water and the Farmland Block make no difference.
does this settle it?

Also, I built my farm onto the side of a lake. I didn't have to use buckets to get water.
I just dug a trench out from the lake like this:
(You could also place soil into the lake if it is shallow enough)
(lake side. Trench starts in middle)
I built my walkway over the water trenches. I planted my wheat in the soil. If your water won't travel far enough down the trench then you will need a bucket. But this works for a very early farm before you find iron.

That is useful. Thanks Zebdiah!
But you'd need a bucket for that to work... just pointing out the one limiting factor to creating this (iron) but that's not a big deal. I am going to try it.
Kudos!
(also, I just saw Swingerzetta's post. That looks like a good lay-out to me.)
The water currents flow downward; that way, when I harvest my wheat, the water carries it to the end of my farming area if I don't get the chance to grab it.
Meh to solve the issue of trampling the crops i just put the dirt block up a level so that i cant walk on it.
From the top ^ (you can make it as long as you want)
and from the side it usually looks like (below) (also this is just one section of it since im lazy)
<--- this being the floor that im walking on (stops the trampling issue...)
I also use a strange setup in homes sometime that dont produce much with only 1 unit, but with a few they can sustain my health issues (i fall a lot...). This also use's the same setup as above as far as how its built vertically
placing half step over the water makes it unseen and gives you a nice walking path :smile.gif: that's just a side view, you can make it as big as you please. I know I got bored and made one that gives me about 1376 wheat per full harvest :smile.gif: (45x40 with 4 rows of the above) I've only harvested and replanted once haven't needed to do any more since

Do you have good ideas ?

That's good but I don't really want to till the grass each time... i'm lazy !
Water doesn't hydrate fields unless it's at the same z-level, so all the water underneath it does nothing. I usually just do this:
I don't need to get food very often, so the inconvenience of sneaking isn't too bad.

So, sorry, all these versions with the water underneath are growing a lot slower because they're not put together right.
Thanks!

I have 7+ chests of bread. I'm going to expand it to farm bambo. As soon ans I figure out how to do that...

I was the second person to use the avatar I have. The rest took it from me. The first I asked, he said yes.
I know what I'm doing. I plan ahead, or get tired and screw up everything.

This is what I use for small underground farms.
The crops have glass above them. The water actually falls to lower floors and hydrates more farms.
