as we all know, the powered carts are currently quite useless. the thread, however, will solve this problem.
1. the powered cart will have this crafting template from now:

means lever
means furnace
means minecart.
2. the powered cart will have 3 intractable parts:
lever: hit it once to change its direction. the powered cart will head the way the lever heads to.
furnace: hit it once to turn the powered cart on/off.
cart: hit it once to open the interface where you store the fuel in the powered cart.
3. another new item:
its crafting template is: , makes 4 couplings.
use a coupling on a side on a cart to attach it to. if theres another cart near it, hit the coupling once in the side that is near the other cart to attach it to it. hit it again to deattach. if you deattach it from both sides, it turns back into the dropped state.
4. two (obvious) small suggestions:
A.the powered cart will be stronger and faster, its speed will be 2x the walking speed on flat surface, 3x on downward slope and 1.5x on upward slope. for each cart that the powered cart pulls/pushes the speed slows down by 10%. adding another powered cart will increase the speed by 50%, but not over 100%.
B. the powered cart will be able to use over fuel sources like wood.
please comment on my idea, even its a simple "support". thanks.

I think the powered cart should be 1.5x on level, 2x on downhill, and 1x on uphill.
I also think that slowing the powered cart because of adjacent carts is too complicated.
I don't know what #3 is/does, so you might want to explain that a little better.
Otherwise I like the idea of having a lever on the cart.

#3 sounds like magnetic cart links, is that your intention? Cause if it is, that'd be awesome. Slightly difficult to implement, though.
I like the idea of using the lever to change the direction of the cart. Simple to implement, simpler to use.
Also, wouldn't it make sense to not use the standard furnace interface for the cart? Shouldn't the powered cart not need a "to be smelted" slot, and just a/more than one "fuel" slots?
I agree with the speed modifications, as they are absolutely necessary.
I must say I'd rather have it so that right clicking the powered minecart comes up with an interface with a slot for fuel and a fire showing burn time, like the furnace, and a big lever GUI which you can switch back/forth. And I think the powered minecart needs to be much faster than walking, even when going uphill pushing 5+ carts. Otherwise there's not really much point.
personally i dont think doing everything on an interface would be a good idea, since 1.you cant do it all as quickly, and 2. ruins the atmosphere. i think the speed i suggested is fine, since you can always add another powered cart to get back to the full speed.
Adding another powered minecart is a pain. What if you want to change direction with two? You'd have to switch both of them. Presumably you'd be riding in a minecart, in which case unless one was directly in front of you and behind you (unlikely?) you'd only be able to reach one.
And I really don't see how a lever interface "ruins the atmosphere". IMO it's just neater and looks better.
i thought the arm length is atleast 4 cubes long? you can easily hit both of them while in a cart. i dont think 20+ cart length trains should be operateable by just a single powered minecart. its ssilly and overpowered. and IMO the less interfaces ingame the better.

The only fix I think powered mine carts need beside being just a bit stronger is the ability to attach them to other mine carts. This way you wouldn't need a level to pick the direction, as they wouldn't have to PUSH other carts, but PULL them. So you could have your carts like this:

Personally, I agree with a GUI for switching directions. There's going to have to be a furnace-esque interface (minus the ore slot, of course) to show how much coal is stored and the rate of consumption, so why not put the switch command in there, too? As was said before, a switch sticking out the top of the cart would look ugly. Also, I think it would be much easier to push the "switch" button in the interface than trying to hit that thin little stick, possibly accidentally hitting the furnace instead.
Also, with all the resources it would take to build a minecart track and a whole train of carts, then link them together, I think it's perfectly reasonable that a single powered cart could carry up to 4 occupied carts uphill at GREATER than walking speed. After that, each additional cart would slow the train more. Another powered cart in the train would allow for 4 more carts, and this would continue proportionately at a ratio of 1 powered to 4 un-powered. In short, the train should never be at or below the walking speed, even uphill, unless more power was needed to bring the train up to full speed.
By the way, the on/off switch should be in the interface too.
