Currently, the Nether has one biome: Hell. Not only does it make the Nether boring, but it makes it difficult to navigate as well. Therefore, I would like to propose some new biomes for the Nether.
Since the Nether is essentially a 'Hell Dimension', the biomes will correspond to Overworld biomes at wherever the Overworld biome would generate. For example, a Nether Portal in a Nether Forest will usually lead to a forest biome in the Overworld.
Here are the proposed biomes:
Labyrinth: A biome consisting of 3x3 tunnels made out of obsidian and occasionally a 13x13x13 room. Contains random Wither skulls and T-shaped soul sand. Caves can generate. Generates wherever there would be a plains biome should it be the Overworld.
Fungi Isles: A biome with nothing but floating Soulsand islands hovering above the lava sea. Nether wart is extremely common. Occasionally, tendrils of obsidian connects the islands. Some islands have pillars of iron bars with a Ghast spawner resting on the very top. Generates wherever there would be a forest biome should it be the Overworld.
Madness: Out of the lava lakes come tendrils of gravel and obsidian. The tendrils are thin, and disrupting a gravel tendril might very well be your doom. Wither Skeletons with bows riding Ghasts are common. Generates wherever there would be an Extreme Hills biome should it be the Overworld.
Pandemonium: All ye who enter, abandon hope, for spawners spawning minecart spawners riding bats spawning Blaze spawners are common. Random obsidian blocks dot the air to catch the spawners. Generates wherever there would be a desert biome should it be the Overworld.
Vechs: Hostility to the maximum, the Vechs biome contains random 3-wide platforms and Ghast-hives of netherrack placed in the air. Both the platforms and the hives are likely to be booby-trapped. A box of glass, Glowstone and bricks can be found somewhere, and it will contain naught but a stick. Generates wherever there would be a taiga biome should it be the Overworld.
Starfall: Random branches of Spruce wood protrudes from islands of obsidian. TNT spawners dot the very top of the biome, raining down explosives on the unfortunate souls below. Generates wherever there would be a tundra biome should it be the Overworld.
Prison of Lost Souls: The Pigmen here were once sane, but they have been zombified and turned insane. Large islands with badly-maintained iron bar fencing with angry Pigman spawners inside are common. Generates wherever there would be a jungle biome should it be the Overworld.
Any biome without a Nether equivalent (Ice Spikes, Savannah, etc.) will have the Hell biome generated in its corresponding location.
NOTE: Names are placeholders.
P.S. Maybe Nether Fortresses should be the Nether version of Abandoned Mineshafts? So players who find an Abandoned Mineshaft could build a Nether Portal there to teleport directly to a Nether Fortress?
It's an interesting concept, but the problem I see is the 1:8 ratio.
Since some biomes and sub-biomes (such as a river) are already small in the Overworld, they would be pointlessly small in the Nether.
It sounds interesting on paper, but probably wouldn't work well when implemented.

All biomes in Minecraft are handled the same. Imagine your having 80blocks of desert, 10 wide river and 80 blocks of plains. If you were to scale that down to 10 blocks of desert, 10 for the river and 10 plains, the nether biomes would be off by quite a bit.
I know. It is supposed to look off. After all, it is another dimension.
The Nether might need some improvements, but I don't think it should mimic the Overworld. It is supposed to resemble a hellish cave, so forests and Jungles seem a little weird to me. I think I'd rather have the current Nether. No support.
It is a hellish forest and a hellish jungle. Kind of like the Overworld, but infinitely more hellish.
there should be a easier way of traveling through the nether. but nether biomes? an interesting concept, but each block in the nether is 18 blocks in the overworld. the biomes should just spawn radomly to keep thing simple and should be as large as a normal biome. but the hell biome should be the most common.
Partial support.

If you want to be a good Minecraft player, then read this.
1. You are actually suggesting a portal system overhaul by doing the "biome mirroring"
2. The Nether is meant to be a lifeless, cavernous, firey underworld with barely anything to make your miserable stay in there interesting except nether fortresses.
That's what I mean. I don't want a Nether that resembles the Overworld. The Nether needs to be unique.
Don't worry. The biomes will be twisted beyond recognition. It won't be a static copy of the Overworld's version with fire and brimstone.
In the end, the only thing the Nether shares in common with the Overworld will be the biome boundaries (scaled down). It will look nothing like the Overworld.

1. Oh yes I am.
2. So it is supposed to be completely useless other than Nether Fortresses? Then why don't Mojang just turn the entire Nether into a big Nether Fortress?
i like the idea of nether biomes but i think the nether needs biomes that are specific to it, not just recreations of over world biomes.
I don't get why biome mirroring is a bad thing. Only the biome boundaries stay the same, but scaled down. There is no real need for the Nether forest to look like a forest of any kind. As I said, the names are placeholder.

1. So you're happy with ruining nether hubs? Wow, you're a nice guy.
2. The nether isn't the overworld. It's supposed to seem bleak and hopeless. Even the Nether Fortresses look dismal and full of despair. This is why Ghasts look and sound like they're crying. The Nether is a dimension of no hope. Just wandering aimlessly. It's supposed to be like an underworld.
well, mirroring isnt bad but i would like to see some verity in the nether. i go to the nether, see almost the same exact biomes, except for redder. board now! i would like to see like a fungi grove which would be very cool to see. that could even have the possibilities to adding giant versions of nether wart.
Another problem i see is that if you scaled the biomes down in the nether you would be able to hunt for a mushroom biome much easier (if they represented the biome in the overworld) but i really like the idea, what about maybe having nether specific biomes? Biomes you wouldnt find in the overworld.

#1: Yup. Provided you know which Nether biome corresponds to the Overworld mushroom biome. My plan for them is that they will not look alike.
#2: You can't find any of the Nether biomes in the Overworld. They are Nether-exclusive and are not connected to the Overworld in any way other than relative location and shape. Maybe a Nether biome known as the Insomnia (probably a biome that looks nothing like any Overworld biome) will correspond to a Forest in the overworld. The biomes do not even have to look like its Overworld equivalent.

Stay fluffy~
Only main biomes are scaled down.

Main biomes = Anything that is not a technical biome.
Technical biomes are things like cliffs and rivers to make the terrain look nice. Therefore, they do not need to be scaled down.
However, main biomes will be scaled down.

Besides, crazy stuff like a stronghold chewed up by caves exist.

I have a new account called "Mushroomsock" now, so please do not send me PMs.
The Nether is crazy.
