Ok, we all know how redstone can only be placed on flat surfaces, right? It's hard to get signals to something high up, especially in a small space. Well, say no more! INTRODUCING: CONDUCTING WITH METALS! *cue applause*
Redstone should be able to move through iron and gold blocks, such as how metals conduct electricity IRL. This allows redstone to move vertically and through walls. It can't go forever, maybe about 10-12 blocks, give or take.
"But TehEpicNinja, it'll take so much resources! Can't it be cheaper?" Sure thing. How about Metal Rods? These are crafted with 3 iron/gold ingots in a straight vertical line. They look like fences, but don't connect when placed next to each other. What they DO do is carry redstone signals vertically, if you stack them on top of each other. It's cheaper than blocks of iron/gold, but they can't carry it horizontally. Use simple dust or other blocks for that.
Oh, and since gold is much harder to find, maybe it could let signals go further?
Well, that's it, everyone! Vote on the poll above and leave a comment below with your opinions. Bye!
Meh. I don't really like this idea. It does not fit minecraft very much.
How so? It makes redstone wiring a little more compact, which always helps. And with the conducting blocks, no more ugly holes in your house/machine/map/whatever!

My sig got screwed up because of a forum glitch and I'm too lazy to go find the banners to fix it.
I don't have any problems with the redstone right now and I am fine hiding it. Also in real life, aren't you going to hide the wires for electricty behind walls? No support...
Redstone torch towers are really easy to make, and enable vertical wiring. If you strong power a block, it already conducts power. You just have to put a repeater against the block.

Metal rods don't really fit minecraft that well, but it is redstone, so whatever. But I still think this is unnecessary as it can already be done.

It's meant to be more compact. A vertical redstone torch thingy takes up a lot more space. Or maybe it's just me...oh well. But as for going through walls...super thick walls would need lots of holes, and it could get tedious. Any ideas how to make it better?

i like the idea, it strikes me as being a more elegant solution to vertical towers. One thing though, what direction would the current be flowing through the block? Would it leave all sides?

Blocks? Yeah, whatever the block is touching(not corners, side by side or on top or below). Rods, however, only carry it vertically, meaning you gotta put a metal block or device on top of the tower.

More compact? A redstone torch tower can only conduct a signal upwards, but it is 1x1xY with Y being the height you want it to go. So, it is already quite compact. Then if you want the signal to go downwards...well it would be a bit more compact as a downward torch tower is 1x2xY.
Still, I will hold back on saying no support for now (may play around with the idea first).

You would hide the wires INSIDE the wall, and if you can't run conduit/wire through a 1 meter thick wall you should turn in your ticket.
Surely it would be better to use redstone blocks for this purpose instead of iron or gold?
I could support that. A stack of redstone blocks should transfer power vertically or horizontally for 16 blocks, up or down. Always seemed strange to me that they can't be unpowered.

Redstone blocks were meant to be a redstone power source movable by pistons, at least that's how I use them in creations such as a lamppost that turns on at night.

It is? Towers I'VE seen are like 3x1xY, maybe they're outdated.

Redstone blocks, as they emit redstone, should carry it infinitely.

Also, redstone blocks do not transfer redstone power, they emit it. That would defeat the entire purpose of redstone blocks.
