coal isnt mostly carbon. Diamond is compressed carbon. Take the amount of carbon in a piece of coal and compress it, you only got a small thread of diamond. Smaller than a string perhaps. Scaling the amount of carbon in obsidian, it makes more sense for obsidian to turn into diamond but that is op.
This is vague. You need to add WAY more detail. And it is somewhat redundant. It is also waaaaay too OP. I mean, if you have been in a world for a minecraft month, you could easily have enough coal to get quite a few diamonds. It may be sort of cool as a mod, but not for vanilla minecraft. No support.
I think it would be really neat if you could turn coal into diamonds. Understanding fully how rare diamond is, and is supposed to be, I think maybe taking stacks of coal and giving a diamond 'fragment' could be cool. I imagine a way using pistons for pressure, and/or lava for heat could be useful.
Maybe in your opinion a stack of coal for a fragment is good, but I have chestloads of stacks of coal on my world. It is soooo easy to get with fortune III, it just wouldn't work out.

Since when is coal not mainly carbon "Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements"? Also, obsidian is mostly silicon and oxygen, with little carbon content (Wikipedia says it has the same composition as granite, only a different form, and granite is shown to have less than 0.05% carbon; that is, not even listed.
That aside, diamonds don't actually form from coal in real life (for the most part, and not directly), so a suggestion to turn coal into diamond in Minecraft makes no sense in being realistic. Not to mention, imagine how many diamonds I could get from all of the coal I mine (while caving I get about 1,000 coal per hour (with Fortune III) and I got about 450 coal blocks worth of coal just yesterday; even without Fortune III that would still be about 200 blocks in about 4 hours of playing). So you'd either need an insane amount of coal to make one diamond as to make it impractical for most people or you'd be able to get diamonds too easily.
I like how you took this from real life and it's a nice idea but I don't think this would be a good idea for minecraft, I know a game that could have this idea. It's called rust

Yes. cause I totally spread gold bars on my toast...
Maybe not about emulating realism, but the components are already there... and let's say it takes a total of 576 diamond fragments to make 1 diamond, (in a 9x9 grid, 64 per square) It would then take a full stack of coal to make 1 fragment. Or, and I'm speculating here, we add a 'middleman' to that.. a full stack of coal, to make 1 diamond 'dust' (for lack of a better term), to make 1 diamond fragment.. I don't think that's too overpowerd.. And adding only one resource to the game.
By the time I somehow get 36 864 coal, I don't think diamonds will be a problem.
1. Craft 9 coal into coal block
2. Craft 9 coal blocks into compressed coal block
3. Craft 9 compressed coal blocks into very compressed coal blocs.
4. Craft 9 very compressed coal blocks into even more compressed coal block.
5. Craft 9 even more compressed coal blocks into a very tiny diamond fragment
6. Craft 9 very tiny diamond fragments into a tiny diamond fragment
7. Craft 9 tiny diamond fragments into a small diamond fragment
8. Craft 9 small diamond fragments into a diamond fragment.
9. Craft 9 diamond fragments into a diamond
This would make farming diamonds even with AFK wither skeleton farms balanced.

That would require 387'420'489 coal just for a single diamond... I would rather just mine diamond. I don't think there is even that much coal in the Minecraft world, unless of course charcoal counts.
Is this supposed to be a joke? If it's not a joke, I don't think you were paying attention to previous posts about the fact that if it requires loads of coal for a diamond, it is just easier to get diamond.

No, it just is the only way to balance this:
Make it so expensive that noone will ever be able to use it.
Even if it would require a full douple chest (or more)it would not be too dificult with automated wither skeleton farms.
And 387420489 coal is only about 2-3 chunks full of chests/trapped chests full of coal.

Then what would be the point of adding it if nobody is ever going to get it? Also, I meant a naturally generated Minecraft world, referring to the amount of Coal Ore...
That also doesn't help your case, your just describing how nobody is ever going to find that much coal.

Um, just so you know, this is possible in real life.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

No. Just no. Coal is pretty easy to find. When I mine, I find TONS of coal. This would be way too overpowered.
