Bonus chests are bad. They sometimes randomly vanish, have no customisable content and some consider them "cheating". I suggest to change them into "Starting Inventory"s.
In world gen options, there will be a button saying "Starting Inventory". When you press it, there will be a menu for you to select items and an "inventory" on the side. You can add to your starting inventory by pulling items from the selection menu to the inventory. When you spawn in the world, you will start with those items.
There are also custom presets. At the top of the Starting Inventory Customisation screen, there will be 3 buttons - "Weak Starters", "Simple Starters" and "Luxurious Starters".
When "Weak Starters" is selected, a random starter inventory will be generated, with 1-2 pieces of leather armor, 1-3 wooden tools and 1-2 bread/apples.
When "Simple Starters" is selected, 1-2 pieces of iron armor is given, 1-2 stone tools and 0-1 iron tools are provided, 3-5 bread/apples are given, and 1-2 pieces of cooked meat is supplied.
When "Luxurious Starters" are selected, 1-2 pieces of diamond armor is given, the rest of the armor slots are filled with iron, 1-2 diamond tools are provided, other tool types are provided as iron, and 10-15 cooked meat is given.
These options are to provide easy customisation of game starts, enabling skipping of the early-game progression and allowing creative builders to experience resource collection without enduring the boring process of gathering wood.

Why Minecraft mobs should NEVER have multiple attacks:
- No other PC mobs do. - Mob behaviour is intended to be simple.
Why you should NOT name new "special ability" weapons as "XXX Swords":
- No other swords have special abilities. - Make a new kind of weapon.
I like the "randomness" and sometimes the nonsense of the bonus chests, sometimes you might get good tools, other times not, sometimes you might get food or not... its the randomness of the content of the chest + the randomness of the world generation that gives a better/worse start or maybe slightly better.
Another downside i see on this suggestion is the armor. Bonus chest wont give you armor at all (source), it will only contain wood/stone tools, sticks, bread, apples and wood. An armor "buff" on the start might change the starts a little bit too much, having an iron chestplate or legs might be a big difference. When you start a world you probably have to chose carefully what you are going to do with the resources you find until you are able to be better equipped.
So you would ask yourself but whats the difference between killing a cow or mining few iron and make ingots to make armor? the difference is that you gotta do it. When you go down to the caves to get some initial iron you probably would have to face some mobs and having iron armor in the beginning would make a difference. About leather armor, that might make the difference too, killing some cows means you wont have them available for breeding in the future and you know as many cows as you can get for the started breeding is better and also makes you think more carefully about how to spend that resource on x thing and not other.
I believe started items or the bonus chest shouldn't have any kind of armor/weapons at all and it should stay that way. Not to mention that starting with iron/diamond is way too much for a start. i understand sometimes you might want some advantage but iron or diamond items or armor and weapons in the start would make a huge difference and would be kinda O.P.
Hope i explained myself... found it kinda difficulty because of the rush since i have to go out for a while but wanted to finish posting this before going.
The main thing I like about bonus chests are the random items they could have stored in there for you.
When you spawn with a bonus chest, it is not meant to give the the biggest boost, however, enough for you to start off and brave the first night on a world.
The issue I see with Customisable Starting Inventories is that it really takes away from what the bonus chest is meant to be.
If you had the possibility of starting with Customisable Starting Inventories, you would be able to spawn in diamonds and practically any other block which really ruins the purpose of Survival, whereas the bonus chest just gives a little boost.

I don't exactly support this suggestion.
Unfortunately, no support from me.
