OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooookay, so lets start my suggestion.
I made a post about this already and such under my "Multiplayer Death" post but I diddnt quite explain why I liked it so much.
So heres the deal chums, this is what im thinkin.
You create this magnetic stone with some concoction of rare materials smashed together in a blender. This stone is cool n' all but it breaks like glass, quick and unrecoverable. This stone would be placed either in your fortress, base, house, apartment complex, outhouse, or wherever. This stone would be part of a system like a GPS.
And i know what your thinking now, "cool, some stupid person wants a GPS in MINECRAFT" Ctrl+W. But wait, theres more. With a bit of gold (or iron) you could craft a type of compass that points to your magnetic block. Should you die in a raid, asplod by a creeper, or para-sail off a cliff you could craft this where you resurrect.
But thats the little problem, of course when you die you keep no items. So you must now craft your compass thing to lead your way back home, which would be well worth the effort instead of wondering 59mb of wilderness to learn your heading the wrong way. The benefit of this would be not having to start completely over, and having a chance to return to your friends/clan.
Seeing as the magnetic block would be hard to acquire it would be safe to say that it wouldn't be something you put in your mudhut. This stone could be configured to lead multiple people to it, for clan usage. Heres a general synopsis of how it would work in layman's terms
Sir Collin Creeper heads home from a good day in the mines. On his way he meets a group of bandits ransacking his home. Collin Creeper rushes inside to fight them off when he is attacked and killed. Poor Collin now has to respawn far far away from home. Lucky for Collin he made a magnetic block under his crafting table, sneakily hidden from intruders. If Collin is lucky, he will be able to run in a mine, grab some ores and make his "GPS" compass. With this nifty little device he is pointed home, he crafts a boat and hightails it home. Should he have placed his magnetic block in front of a 4x4 window for the world to see, the intruders could break the stone and destroy all chance of Sir Collin Creeper finding his way home. The End
You may notice this is really a very remarkable thread.
I don't like the concept of magnetic blocks... You could fairly easily find your way back home with just a compass and basic knowledge of local landmarks.

Thats the thing, i too would like Notch to add a compass, that would be a LOT of help. But then landmarks, this cluster of trees is somewhat similar to that cluster of trees. In the long run this would be very helpful, and its not like everyone would be able to make this. Other people would have to stick to a compass and landmarks.
Also, setting down a new one would destroy the old one. There would be no multiple block nonsence
How about this: Holding a compass and right-clicking on the magnetic block will set the compass to that particular block. That way you can have multiple magnets (and multiple compasses pointing to multiple places), and random intruders can't pick up on your magnet's field, giving away your base's location.

Why?
Magnetic blocks of this sort should not work like this -- meaning there shouldn't be ridiculous 'tuning' of a compass to certain blocks, and you should not have your own 'personal' magnetic block.
They should have a stackable effect, and compasses should point to the strongest source from whatever point you're at.
It would make more sense for a compass-type thing to point kind of at an average of all nearby magnet blocks but that's less useful and less interesting, I think.
Anyway, I'm all for this idea if it uses a relatively uniform and not crazy artificial method of locating things. I would suggest allowing several magnet blocks to be put all together (touching one another) to create a super-powerful magnet block that has greater power over range -- this would allow you to find your way to it from much further away.
Then, finally, divide the power of any magnetic source by distance^2 (see: gravity)
EDIT ----> Magnets should not just be a thing to bury underground for others to never be able to find, but to lead you easily and risklessly to where you want to go. If you make a magnet, it's a big, fat, "there's something important here" sign. Therefore, you can place magnets near something important and recall simply the landmarks from there. You can use it to mark important or interesting locations for anyone to find, and towns and such will be able to gather several magnetic blocks to attract new citizens (and perhaps raiders and attacks -- there is, of course, some risk involved in building these all-attracting magnetic blocks).

A.I., the world already has three compasses: the movement of sun, moon, and clouds. Maybe stars too, actually, but I am content to use these three. Local landmarks are okay, but the problem is that they are easy to confuse with one another (Cyrix already said this) and some people might not even be able to use them effectively because they can't handle large view ranges.
I suck at finding my way home by means of air compass and landmarks ):

"I want to see forum posts saying "how do i kill dragon" with replies reading "lol"."
---> vede claimed Notch said this (and it is awesome).
The magnet was a suggestion to get this together. I would only want this to be rather simple. Although, adding magnets together to make a more powerful magnet for farther distance would be good. Even though id rather stick to one block. The reason i'd say the previous block would be destroyed is people would hide so many of these magnets you would never find them all. If you want to really do some damage, you'd go for their magnet if they have one. I'd suggest one, but maybe you could upgrade the magnet somehow (i'm against upgrading too though). If notch doesnt add something like this, then i at least want a compass. I followed the sun to find my way home. I know the sun sets in the West, but i guess Minecraft's sun sets in the East? That or the Infdev previewer went topsy-turvy .
How about this: Holding a compass and right-clicking on the magnetic block will set the compass to that particular block. That way you can have multiple magnets (and multiple compasses pointing to multiple places), and random intruders can't pick up on your magnet's field, giving away your base's location.
Hmm i should have read farther than "How about this:" because you have a very nice point. Except this particular mechanism would be for if you died, meaning you couldn't set your compass on the magnet unless you were next to it, which you're not. Getting lost however might be less of a pain with this.
