( First time making a topic) I was playing Minecraft today and I started thinking about how most of our time in-game, when it comes to where to build a house and live, is spent above ground. I started thinking of ways that I could be forced to live underground and for the most part reverse the normal life most players live in Minecraft. My first thought was almost immediately make a gamemode where the player was thrown into a post-apocalyptic world with some type of world generated cities with sewer systems and metros ( basically reverse abandoned mine shafts ) and widen and deepen underground caverns to kind of look like the emulsion caves in Gears of War. Underground you would find it a lot easier to live than above ground, with new types of edible fungus or new mushrooms. Above ground there would be some type of poisonous gas or some type of limitation method such as radiation poisoning to make the search for resources challenging and more rewarding, maybe even add in new types of mobs or mutated versions of old mobs, for example a flying creeper, giant(er) spiders, ghouls instead of villagers and even more zombies. The environment would be deadly too, with acid replacing lava and some plants being hostile. Seeing as the world is pretty much nuked there could be randomly generated craters, with different types of ores, these regions would take up your radiation levels rapidly and it would be a way of replicating the danger of mining in deep caverns filled with lava in normal Minecraft. So basically a post apocalyptic mode, where the game forces you underground to live, rather than above ground.
( First time making a topic) Doesn't matter really, if it's your first time you should read some stickies for good measure.
I was playing Minecraft today and I started thinking about how most of our time in-game, when it comes to where to build a house and live, is spent above ground. I started thinking of ways that I could be forced to live underground and for the most part reverse the normal life most players live in Minecraft. This is already possible. People just stick to the surface for homes because everything is more convenient (animal mobs, crops, trees, etc.)
No no no no no no no no no no no NO. That doesn't fit the game at all. Minecraft is not Gears of War. That wouldn't even be a new gamemode, it would almost be a new game entirely, and not a very good one.
Underground you would find it a lot easier to live than above ground, with new types of edible fungus or new mushrooms. Above ground there would be some type of poisonous gas or some type of limitation method such as radiation poisoning to make the search for res- So a gamemode that flops the living conditions of the underground and surface? Turning the world upside down like that isn't that good of an idea. It also doesn't fit in the list very well. Survival, Creative, Adventure and an... underground mode? No thanks.
challenging and more rewarding, maybe even add in new types of mobs or mutated versions of old mobs, for example a flying creeper, giant(er) spiders, ghouls instead of villagers and even more zombies. The environment would be deadly too, with acid replacing lava and some plants being hostile. This mode should be called "Altered Survival Mode".
If you want to live underground, then just... live underground. We don't need to add programming-headache gamemodes and "mutated mobs" and copying Gears of War just to do that. Absolutely no support.
Honestly this would be a better mod than anything thinking it out more.
I did read the sticky on what not to do before making this post, I made sure to add detail and everything it asked.
Just want to clear up I don't want to copy GoW, I just want to get the image of the caverns they had into players minds when I try to explain what it would look like (huge cave systems with lakes of glowing acid rather than lava). If it isn't clear, the environment above ground would be too messed up to grow trees in, so some type of wood source found underground would be needed for this to be realistic. Any other resources that would normally be available above ground could be substituted as well.
As for saying it wouldn't be a good game mode, the same could be said for Hardcore, I love hardcore as it adds a risk factor to the game, but others find it to be the headache you spoke of. This adds variety to the game for anyone that wants to try it. If a new game mode is added the decision to play it is yours. Some people would love to see a new gamemode like this added to the game, and the flip-flop approach would definitely add some variety to the game.
I'm not suggesting a change to the normal gameplay, I love the gamemodes already available. Ofcourse a gamemode forcing you to live underground would be un-needed but so is hardcore mode, so to say that is pointless. I thought this idea was cool and I'm sure there are a lot more players out there that would agree.
Otherwise, this would be an adventure map although it could be a map generation with bedrock at 0,1, 254, and 255 with no access to the sky, but with that said; unless you had started with saplings and enough overhead space to grow them, I don't know how you'd be able to get started.
I thought of that too when I was thinking about this I've never played the game but pretty much the same concept. As for wood, I was thinking of having to mine for tree roots, adding that to the list of mined resources. Above ground ( I guess more below than anything ) desert and jungle temples would be substituted with random houses having bomb shelters, where you could find precious resources like clean water for brewing or wood, maybe even enchant books that gave you a radiation immunity in different levels. The same thing could be done for fortresses underground, turn those into vaults like the ones in Fallout. One thing I might add in, the biomes wouldn't be natural in most cases, I'm thinking of a heavily urban area, complete with roads and different types of buildings generated, any gaps between cities would have a road between them.
Let me ask you a question, when you go to a steakhouse; do you order medium rare porterhouse, topped with vanilla ice cream and a chicken quesadilla?
No? They're different dishes? You eat them at different times?
Yeah, never a good idea to mix franchises. If you want to play Fallout 3, play Fallout 3. If you want to play Bioshock, play that. If you want to play GoW or MLL then play those. This forum is dedicated to vanilla inclusions, and the last thing Mojang needs right now is another lawsuit with Bethesda.
I don't think a lawsuit would be a problem, these are just examples of very successful games from the past that have a quality about them that I like and that I am trying to depict. I'm using them to get the image into your head of what I'm trying to explain. If companies had rights that broad everyone would be getting sued lol
Since when does the post-apocalyptic game setting belong to Bethesda? They have Fallout and that's about it, they don't own the rights to anything that's around post-apocalyptic. Otherwise, Metro (that you mentioned earlier) and even more Stalker would have huge issues.
1) Stop pettifogging
2) They apparently thought they owned the word "Scrolls"
3) Intentionally ripping off elements of another's IP is (unsurprisingly) copyright infringement; this is the reason why we can't have good things.
A post apocalyptic world would be more than awesome... actually... anything that could make this game hard and the survival... umm.. a survival. I would like something like that to be in the game from Mojang and not an adventure map that would need 150 different mods to work, but the chances of anything like that happening are about the same as me being accepted today in NASA. Oh well... now I want radiation.. time to install that Fallout 2 again me thinks
Exactly, all I'm suggesting is a game mode that would make survival more of a survival, and in a more interesting environment. Honestly I think the harder it is the better it is, and I can't be the only one to think that way. I know your feel btw trying to get Fallout 3 from a buddy right now, all this post-apocalyptic talk isn't helping my thirst
I have, but they had little bearing on the actual point you was attempting to arrive at.
The big point is: When a suggestion asks to adapt gameplay of one game or system to reflect another, it's time to just play the other game.
As an example: I could ask Mojang to make a Bejeweled clone with Bejeweled gameplay using Minecraft diamonds, gold, iron, etc... But why do that when I can instead play Bejeweled? This is the major point here. Simply, I think his suggestion is a bit too derivative.
That's not very original, at least in a good way. You're just flipflopping things. What's the point of changing lava to acid?
As for saying it wouldn't be a good game mode, the same could be said for Hardcore Not really, no. You can't compare a gamemode that simply gives you one life and an altered health bar to one that completely alters the world drastically in a way that doesn't even fit Minecraft. We swing swords and brew potions, so metros don't have much place there.
Hardcore mode is nothing more than an extra difficulty for players who want something a bit higher than normal hard mode.
I love hardcore as it adds a risk factor to the game, but others find it to be the headache you spoke of. This adds variety to the game for anyone that wants to try it. Just because something adds variety doesn't make it good. I could go "okay so um let's add blue birds and yellow birds and green birds and greener birds and flying cows and super pigs dat punch thru walls and all this adds variety!!!" The idea still remains bad.
If a new game mode is added the decision to play it is yours. Some people would love to see a new gamemode like this added to the game, and the flip-flop approach would definitely add some variety to the game. That first sentence is something the suggestion guide tells you not to do. Never use the "well if you don't like it don't use it" line. Just because people have the choice, doesn't stop Mojang from having to make the insane amount of effort.
Yeah about that, so far I'm not seeing many agreeing people.
Take a look at normal survival mode. It's all very well balanced. On the surface, you got animals, villages, trees, oceans, wide open space to build. In the underground, it's more jagged and dangerous, but you got ores, mineshafts, dungeons with chests, strongholds, lava here and there, etc. Both the surface and underground offer something unique that the other doesn't.
Now let's look at your gamemode. Underground has almost everything, while the surface is a place you almost never want to be. Your idea completely stomps on that balance, and at the same adds metros and sewers and stuff that don't even fit Minecraft's "theme".

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
A post-apocalyptic environment can bring you proper survival (since even the zombie hordes failed at it) and by adding it on a different mode and not all over the game
Well, it might, but this particular suggestion is a universe and a half away from being vanilla worthy. Randomly turning lava into acid, adding all these things that don't match Minecraft and throwing in these mutant mobs won't exactly "solve the problem once for all".
I for one, am all for this idea. The thought of being forced below ground 90% of the time is awesome, along with the cities and underground tunnels.
Could add a few more building blocks (cement, road etc.) and really as a separate game-mode, it wont affect game play otherwise. Like Hard-Core it is there for those that want it, and adds more blocks and possibilities for creative builders and map makers.
All round would be an awesome addition
Those hating on the idea, don't shoot it down so hard. This would be a game mode that is suited to some and not others.
Vechs super hostile maps don't suit certain people, they prefer a bit of an easier survival challenge. But those that play enjoy it and new ones that come out. Certain players would enjoy this and it could be expanded upon here and there over the months/years.
Either mojang adds this, or someone makes one serious mod!!!

No, cities would be awful. Villages can give us way more than enough.
Those hating on the idea, don't shoot it down so hard. This would be a game mode that is suited to some and not others.
Perhaps we're not shooting it down hard enough. Maybe you're supporting too much. All this gamemode would be is just people spending more time at a different Y-level while pointless hazards are placed above it. On top of that, he suggested things that hardly even fit the game at all.
Either mojang adds this, or someone makes one serious mod!!!
Dude, I am willing to bet an insane amount of money that something like this will never, ever, ever touch vanilla minecraft.
In reply to Zippy, the point of changing lava to acid is to fit the feeling more, as the above ground pools would be acid too, honestly it could go either way, just making water a precious resource too and keeping lava, I just felt like a greenish yellow hue to caves and above ground lakes would give my idea more atmosphere.
This is a little more than different types of birds, I'm suggesting is a new take on survival and I'm backing it up with tons of ideas on how to substitute certain things.
As for the nobody agreeing part, there are a couple so far that like this idea above, its pretty much 50/50 so far. You mentioned how it would take an insane amount of effort to pull this off on Mojang's part, and that's the same reason I didn't post this in the small idea sticky.
I did state that certain resources would force you to venture above ground, searching for bomb shelters and for craters just like you would search for underground ravines or dungeons and temples in the normal game, not all game play would be underground, all I'm saying is that the thought process would be different, instead of digging up to the surface to get to safety after a long spelunking, you would seek shelter underground where the same threat from the normal game play would be found such as zombies and skeletons, but still a lot safer than above ground.
On another note, I could see a bunch of awesome mods for this too, like bands of raiders or packs of ghouls that set up temporary camps and such, new mobs that someone else wanted to see put in that would actually make sense here rather than in the normal game. I see anyone opposings point, I know its a stretch to have this put in, but its an idea none the less, one that I'm more than sure a huge group of players would love. Negative thoughts on this are fine, I like clearing anything up and honestly it helps to refine this idea down better but it really seems like you're going out of your way with some of those replies to stomp out the little flame I got going on this.
This would be fun, and I would probably use it, and I think it would be awesome in the game. But, in comperison to other things in minecraft, it should be a mod. So, half support.
Also, I usually live below ground, anyway. Also again, I don't think it should add anything new. You didn't give enough detail for it too, and it should just with things in normal minecraft.
Well, it's one of those things that I will actually say sounds AMAZING in theory, but falls flat on implementation; and works quite well as a mod. While the idealization is for this to be a vanilla addition; it feels too far removed from the source for it to fit in a reasonable form; especially when newer players load "underground" expecting something totally different than what they actually get.
I did read the sticky on what not to do before making this post, I made sure to add detail and everything it asked.
