It just seems unneeded. Making stone bricks would essentially require slabs, stairs etc. Cobblestone would also need the same. Just having the stone alleviates that issue.

Or we could instead have the three types of each kind, then at a later date, post-implementation decide whether slabs and such are worth including or not. Personally I don't think slabs and stairs would be necessary, since you can always find a replacer-material to build such decor out of.
That'd be extremely interesting, the only thing that would be a concern is how much this would hurt generation. But yes, I love the idea for different colours as well as them being found in specific places is interesting.
@Deonyi, it would be quite... awkward, to only have a stone variant, and not a cobblestone and stone brick variant, regarded on how stone works. Stone turns in cobblestone when mined, unless you silk-touch it, and stone can be crafted into stone bricks too.
As said before, the is plenty of space left between ID's, enough for about 60+ more ID's, regarded their current engine [meaning that there are solutions underway for a bigger range of ID's]. There always also could be first the full blocks, and later on the stairs/slabs.
the practical point is that people would love to craft houses, settlements, perhaps whole cities, with variating kinds of stone instead of one and the same type over and over again. Having only smoothstone won't solve that.

You want to be a dragon? Well, then you need to have wings, a passion to hoard, and have a deadly breath.
Oh, and did I forgot to tell you dragons are extremely territorial? ROAWR >:)

There is this one house I pass by every day going to/from work that has a fence made from that tan colored stone and dark brown fences. I've always wanted to replicate that in minecraft, but currently you cannot unless you modify a resource pack, which is unacceptable as it would make other builds hideous.
This idea is a step in the right direction. There isn't a need for the stairs and slabs. Those can come later if people so desire it. Just having the new stones in cobble and brick form would be enough for me. Not having the cobble and brick versions wouldn't make any sense. Well not having a cobble version anyway. I suppose I could deal without the brick version, but...why?
