because you need a diamond pickaxe to mine it, and speedrunners crazy tactics do not apply, they abuse everything that exists in the game.
and like i have said, using flint would be EASIER, nobody cares about how FAST it is unless they are speedrunners, the proof is that only speedrunners ever use the bucket method, which is faster, but not easier.
Even without rushing it too much, I can still find diamonds pretty reliably within 15 minutes of gameplay. That's with stopping to gather food, not digging straight down, and making a set of iron tools and armor along the way. It's really just not that hard to get diamonds.
Speedrunners can find diamonds much quicker, like 5-8 minutes. If you don't believe me, you can view the videos yourself on Youtube. So, no I don't think that a naturally occurring block that you can obtain before a half an hour of gameplay is an endgame block. You guys are inflating the value of obsidian way too much.

So I am considered a speed running because I use the bucket method, even though it usually takes me sometimes months to head to the end? That is a contradiction for me, since I like to take my time. I usually use the bucket method because it is a lot easier and less tedious, then waiting for the perfect enchant or wasting diamonds on the portal.
Either way, even if this was implemented I probably would only use it in certain situations. All depends on whether I want to wait a long time for each break or a long time gathering gravel enough to get flint. Even if I had loads in storage I would still be 50-50 on whether I want to even tango with that much despised block that builds up in storage over time. An enchanting table is probably the only thing I would use obsidian for since I usually opt-out to the bucket method for the portal. Will remain so even if this was put in.
So I still stand 50-50 on the idea since it will not hurt or sway me to use it instead. Rather for me it just adds another option or "route" to take when determining how I want to go about certain items. Each to their own I guess...

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Obsidian is gathered only by a diamond pick and after about 15 seconds on mining because it's main use is in Nether Portals. 91 flint and an iron ingot could get you into the Nether easily. Also, using buckets to get to the Nether by solidifying lava into obsidian.
In-game testing from more than one player has shown that the rates of gathering 9 flint and 1 obsidian block are about the same. If you were going to post, "Omergerd! You could get hundreds of obsidian in just minutes!" please don't bother, because you're just wrong.
You need a diamond pickaxe to mine obsidian or a bucket to solidify lava wherever you please, you only need your bare fists to collect flint, so no support.

So, are you saying that the rate of punching a bit of gravel until you get 9 flint is the same as grabbing some wood, getting a pick, mining some stone, maybe finding iron, if not, surviving the night then getting iron, searching long and hard for some diamonds (unless you are very lucky or you cheat), often getting in a lot of danger, sometimes dying, then finally getting your diamonds, then getting back home, then crafting your pick, AND mining the obsidian?
No support. This would be a nether portal in a minute instead of an hour. (Okay, it might not take an hour normally and that just sounded better in the context and okay I'll shut up.)
Oh, and about the " well the bucket method is easy already so yeah" argument:
Ever heard of an enchanting table? Do you know what you need for that? Do you know what you can't use to get the materials to make that?
I am so mad at the Sky fanboys who are like "ADD BUUUDDDER TWO MINCRFT CUZ BURDR Z SP ASWUM ND STUFZ BUDDERBUDDERBUDDER :D:D:D:D" that I am dedicating my signature to stopping them. I had gone into more depth, but the stupid signature limit stopped me. Oh well.

Yes, I'm saying that because I have tested it and at least one other person has tested this. And we weren't using our hands to collect the flint, we were using stone and iron shovels. On the one hand, you have your guess on how long it takes and on the other hand I have how long it actually took.

Enchanting table also requires diamonds, which everyone seems to forget. So you still would need to find diamonds to make one even if you used flint to get the four obsidian blocks. You also need a book, which requires leather and reeds, or finding a village with a library. So no, 36 gravel would not equal an enchanting table if this suggestion were implemented.
i wasn't talking about early on, think about how pathetically easy it is to find huge amounts of gravel, i get 2 stacks of it just by looking around for ores that i need, it is very common.
well so is obsidian. but you have to put work into getting that... oh wait you will still have to put work into getting 9 flint to make an obsidian block hmmmm. I do agree that this suggestion has some balance and design issues but I really don't think greifing is one of them. there are infinitely more effective ways to ruin someone's house other then filling it with costly obsidian. so I don't see a probable with actually having tons of obsidian. I have an issue with getting it so early on like you do.
earlier I suggested the requirement for a fortune enchanted shovel to get an "obsidian shard" that you then crafted with 8 flint into a "glassy block" that can then be smelted to obtain one obsidian block. this would remove the issue of getting to the nether early, but still leave that small chance that you find and enchanted book and get there simi-early (iron anvil stage)
I like the idea of being able to covert your flint into obsidian. obsidian is an underrated building supply mostly because its so hard to get. most PVP servers just sell the stuff at spawn anyway and for the ones that don't the method I suggested is still time-consuming and resource intensive. its only purpose is to make obsidian more obtainable, not more quickly obtained. what do you think? does this solve most of the issues?
After reading the response to the most obvious criticism, I have to say all my initial objections are gone.
Support.
I almost have to agree. It is not that difficult nor time-consuming to get a diamond pickaxe. Even if you could make obsidian from flint I wouldn't do it. Acquiring flint is boring and bothersome, so I'd still rather find diamonds and mine obsidian or use the bucket method. The flint I get from the gravel I find while mining is more than enough for what I need it (automated portal/fireplace activation).
I honestly would prefer it if gravel blocks (sand, too) were destroyed when using your fists (still having a chance to drop flint), thus requiring a shovel to actually acquire the block. I find shovels are mostly useless as they don't last long enough to be of a higher value than your fists in my opinion.
I don't think that flint should be made into Obsidian. That just seems kinda awkward. Why not a flint block, which has pretty good blast resistance, and a texture a bit brighter than Obsidian, without any purple colouration to it? Besides, I need more stuff to make my Kefka-towers out of, than the common obsidian/cobble/wool/wood/sand/dirt/netherrack/ice/etc.
Here's an idea. A lot of people are talking about how it needs to come after diamonds in tech tree. Make it a shapeless 8 flint + 1 diamond pick = 1 obsidian + 1 diamond pick with 5 durability lost. More expensive than just obsidian mining in terms of durability, but easier.

Here is my signature. If you like it, I am amazed.
I apologise if this makes you feel bad, but Flint being crafted into obsidian is way too overpowered. It's obsidian. Let me stress that again: it's obsidian with lots of capability to do many things.

Sorry, but...
No support.
And what can obsidian do exactly? You would still need diamonds anyways for an enchanting table, you can already easily make nether portals without a diamond pick, and the only thing the block has going for it is that it's blast resistant, but unless you are on a pvp server, nobody ever builds their houses to survive explosions anyways because doing so would look hideous.

The problem with the truth, is that it never lies.
Eh... I'm not a big fan of the idea. I might be swayed towards a yes if the oceans are returned to sand instead of gravel. Gravel has become a very common block, ocean (and other water sources), hills/mountains, villages, the Nether, etc. Perhaps if your goal in mind is to gather obsidian and or diamond quickly is your gaming style, it may be quick for someone. But for more casual players, such as myself, we don't typically find diamond within 15 minutes of game play; however, I find a ton of gravel. All you'd have to do is find a plains or savanna village and dig up the roads, no tools necessary, to obtain enough flint to make a portal, albeit before one is typically ready to explore it. (There are other methods that work too, such as finding an ocean biome, etc.Villages are just an example, and yes I realize they aren't always found within 15 minutes of game play either.) It is my view that obsidian/nether portals, etc. are a symbol of obtaining diamond. By changing this, the old method becomes obsolete, diamond practically loses one of the benefits of it's usage in picks, but shovels and gravel/flint gain this boost in usefulness. I think it's a creative idea, but I personally do not agree with it.
Nine flint for one obsidian? On the Factions server I play on, obsidian is a rare building material that is pretty much the only safe thing to buidl your bases out of. What equalises its blast resistance is how hard it is to get, requiring to go down deep underground with at least diamond tools. This would pretty much ruin the difficulty of getting obsidian.
And I don't care about the first criticisim, get one fortune enchanted shovel and you're swimming in flint in about two minutes.

A. lets you bypass getting a diamond pick to reach the neither (You can still do it anyway with buckets)
B. Lets you create obsidian from inside the nether.
C. Now that ocean floors are gravel you can mass get flint by trading gravel to villagers. (Emeralds are dirt easy to get)
