As of right now, Minecraft is officially at version 1.6.4, and as some of you may be aware, with the recent snapshots previewing changes 1.7 will bring, it's looking like render distance options will change a little.
Right now (as of writing this post in 1.6.4 times), you have four simple render distance options; those being tiny, short, normal, and far. From what I understand, these distances render approximately 2, 4, 8, and 16 chunks outwards from a player in a radius.
The recent snapshots suggest that render distance in 1.7.x will change to be more user configurable to any value between 2 chunks and 16 chunks. This gives the user control, so this is a great thing.
Here's my suggestion. Wouldn't it be greater if we could configure this a little higher? (something like 20 chunks or perhaps even 24 chunks as two examples). Note that I'm referring only to the render distance here; the number of chunks considered actively loaded or whatnot can remain the same if possible/need be.
For those who wish to point out that this will increase performance demands, yes, it will. As the number of chunks increases, the performance demand is supposedly increased more than that. However, why not give the user a choice, especially now that there is a slider, which is all about more user choice? For those who have the hardware for it, they often have a frame rate number high enough where they wouldn't mind trading some of it for a little extra scenery. I know Minecraft is much more demanding in ways than it seems, but PCs have improved quite a bit these last few years, and my nearing-three-year-old mid-range graphics card handles the far render distance plus AA and AF @ 1920 x 1200 with frames to spare, so while performance will go up more than linearly, it's still not impractical.
That brings up the point of doing this for a potential smaller part of the user base. As per coding it, unless something major were to have be done to accommodate a higher limit, I figured it was a rather simple enough suggestion that might be easy (I could be wrong). I figured that while the changes were being done with the rendering distance slider, simply adding the option to put it a little higher for those who may choose to do so could go a long way.
Ever since 1.3.x was released, it seemingly changed the way render distance worked. Mods offering extreme view distances seemingly stopped working, as did OptiFine's ability to render further than the game's maximum by default, and nothing since has been able to get more (this I'd love to be wrong about). It'd be great to have an official, vanilla way to get a little more out of it now.
If someone wants to correct me on anything, go ahead.
TL;DR
May we have the maximum render distance increased just a little? (Pretty please)
