While yes, minecraft isn't about realism. there is a certain amount of logic that goes into adding a feature. let me explain how spreading podzol is not logical in minecraft's context.
Mega Taigas are large biomes with tons of massive trees, podzol was added to suggest that the ground was covered in rotting leaves due to the large amount of trees. So in minecraft's context spreading podzol wouldn't make any sense.
however, what would make sense and would still add the ability to farm podzol to the game, is if it spread ONLY in its native biome. suggesting that any grass or dirt you place in the Mega Taiga was slowly getting covered with leaves.
so 25% support. I think it should spread but only in its native biome, that way it sticks with the logic used behind adding Podzol.
i think people need to understand the difference between realism and contextual logic in games. when a game is made the creators create there own universe that makes sense in its own ways. zombies exist because apparently the undead are a thing in minecraft, most blocks don't fall because that's how minecraft's physics work.
when you add a feature to a game you should consider the GAMES reality not real life. In minecraft undead beings are a reality, so suggesting adding undead wolves or something still makes sense. But if I where to suggest that undead wolves be added to a game like Starmade, people would probably think I was stupid. why would there be zombie wolves in a game where zombies have never existed before?
My point is just because games are not real life and aren't realistic by our standard doesn't make it sensical to ignore the principles that are put in place already. Wood does not explode, stone does not float, diamonds burn, and dead leaves don't grow across the ground.
You are extremely inconsistent here, yes, wood in Minecraft doesn't explode, no, stone does float, diamonds do indeed burn, and dead leaves don't grow across the ground.
So basically, your point is inconsistent and difficult to understand, and I'm confused by it, what are you saying?, is Minecraft meant to follow real life, isn't it?.
What I got out of that post is that there are a whole bunch of crazy things that happen in Minecraft which have no connection to real life and the non-computer world. I agree. If all it took to create stone was a flowing stream of lava (that never quit... ever... even without a volcano nearby and could even be relocated with a bucket) and a lake full of water, the industrial revolution would be very different indeed. Just imagine IRL somebody walking around carrying a backpack full of 2300 cubic meters of boulders each a cubic meter in size (somehow compressed into magical stacks of 64 boulders each that can in turn have a whole bunch of those stacks shoved into a strange chest) that you could casually use to build house... and throw them into that mysterious stream of lava when you had no other place to shove those boulders.
Minecraft simply doesn't reflect reality at all, so people arguing that Podzel should follow patters of real life patterns while ignoring other principles of behavior as found in Minecraft just shoot themselves in the foot with their arguments. There is no reason to prohibit dirt-based variant blocks to be renewable, and in this case Podzel itself sticks out like a sore thumb in terms of even why it can be manufactured. I won't go into other arguments previously made, but I will note several items that previously were unique, creative-only, or rare did eventually become renewable.

Restriction: Make it only can spread under a low light level, about the level that hostile mobs can spawn. So, only at night can they spread naturally. And make it also such that it must be exposed to the moon or something, make it a bit harder for it to spread since its dead.
Actually, I have never played/ tested podzol before
There is no reason for Podzol to spread. It's just soil.
/no_support
podzol needs to be digged with a silk touch enchanted tool or else it turns into a normal peace of dirt, the fact that you cannot replace blocks of podzol on their own biome is asthetically ugly and it also makes no sense, i think that is reason enough.
also the OP made a poll with several other options to the one of podzol spreading to adjacent dirt (wich honestly i don't like either), i would like it if you were to consider those too instead of jumping into the thread saying no to everything.
thank you for showing us that you cannot find a decent argument against why minecraft doesn't need (wich it isn't) to be realistic and instead come up with a pathetic mock of the people who don't agree with your point of view.
Like i said before, you could also try and consider suggesting something else that would be more realistic about podzol spread (like i did) instead of just jumping in with your negativity and narrow minded attitude trying to shove us into your flawed logic.
it is really annoying and it makes you look like a random troll.

If you read my previous comments, you can see I provided an alternative to the spreading. And I'm mocking the most common counterargument, not people who disagreed with me.

my point is that when adding a feature the logic of the game should be considered, not real life.
Examples:
Diamonds burn. so dirt, stone, and other non-burnable items should burn too.
wood does not float, so why should stone?
mycelium and grass are plant life and seem to spread because of that.
Podzol Is supposed to be leaves on the ground. Not alive like mycelium and grass. so why would it spread?
what I'm trying to say is that by looking at things already inside Minecraft you can decided if something makes sense to add. its not about realism or real life, its not about it being fantasy. its about Minecraft. there is a balance between nonsensically adding whatever seems fun because its not real life, and making a game strictly based on real life principles.
If you read my previous comments, you can see I provided an alternative to the spreading. And I'm mocking the most common counterargument, not people who disagreed with me.
Fair enough, i didn't see your post about it, i will now proceed to eat my own words in a dark corner.
sometimes i tend to misjudge people for their last comments and get my ideas too early, thank you for not responding on a hostile way like i did, u earned a rep and my respect.
And about realism, i have to agree with iceeye, there must be a balance between fantasy and realism(i guess thats what you meant at first), things don't need to be 100% scientifically plausible, but some sense must be made into it or else it turns into the ridiculous side.
At first:
Podzol spreading? What's next? Clay and Sand spreading? Bahahaha, how rediculous!
Then:
While podzol speading is a strange (and unrealistic) game mechanic, it would be nice to be able to use it in builds. Maybe iit should drop podzol, not dirt when destroyed with a shovel.
If you want a response, quote me.
I have too slow an internet connection to be a lurk. If I wate time opening the page, I might as well reply.
Yes. Yes I do.
IMHO the best mechanics for podzol spread would be:
1. Podzol spreads to dirt only - no grass or mycelium, DIRT. This avoids podzol creeping to nearby "grass taigas" without human intervention;
2. Spreading must be slower than grass or mycelium, to hint it's a geological process;
3. There must be spruce leaves above the target dirt, since decaying leaves play a role in RL podzol's formation;
4. Biome must be taiga or related, since most podzol is found in cold climates.
Podzol is dead leaves above the ground. dead leaves dont grow and spread over nearby ground.
1. It's a kind of soil. Not just "dead leaves".
2. We're discussing about a computer game with green exploding "things" with faces, and where stone and wood float. Realism isn't priority, consistency with other mechanics already present is.
3. Some people want to farm podzol, that's the point.
4. Podzol not being "alive" was already discussed in the first page.
I think it should be craftable by crafting dirt (maybe a grass block instead?) with a leaf block. Perhaps change it so you do not need silk touch. I mean, it would not really make sense if it spreads because it is a mixed of dead leaves. I mean, dead leaves spreading? Even though Minecraft is definitely not about realism, I still like things to make a bit of sense.

I support the idea of the Podzol be generated under certain conditions, not spreading.
