Since podzol is (essentially) decaying plant matter, perhaps it could form under any leaves. A tree could be grown, and after a significant amount of time the grass/dirt blocks under it could become podzol. I think it would add a realistic touch in general, since any and every forest I've been in has been covered in decaying plant life. Outside of that, I want it to form in the little forest I planted in my town
That's a great idea - it is definitely missing from all forests. It would give the forests a more realistic feel to them - I wonder though how much it would cost in terms of performance to have it being checked on all visible chunks to see if the proper blocked were podzol versus dirt or grass? I think podzol paths through all forests would be a cool addition.
I like the idea of podzol forming in other forests, but maybe only in the roofed forest and oak forest. The birch forest and savanna biomes don't really lend themselves to that. Also, as much as I want podzol to become renewable, I am not in favor of it spreading to grass blocks, even if the grass blocks are under the tree. If a player wants to remove podzol from under some trees and lay down grass, it would be annoying if it would return to a podzol state.
Still I really like the idea of seeing podzol in more forests then just the mega taiga
I... I don't know, I won't support because we are not entirely sure what will be happening in the future with this new block. This block could possibly be used as a portal block (Highly unlikely, but just something to state), perhaps even a tilled feature to get a rare seed/item. I won't have this spread infinitely until I know what Mojang intends to do with it. If there is nothing to be done with it, then I support.I can see this becoming more abundant, but not entirely infinite.

I had an idea that was very similar, but it only spread to areas under leaves, and could take over grass. It also has a thin-snow-like block, one layer gathers for very 3 blocks of leaves above it, and could drop sticks/apples/saplings.

You are right, we don't know if Mojang has any future plans for the podzol block. But they did release podzol in the 1.7 official release, so we can look at what the block currently does (nothing); and as a community we can push for podzol to become renewable or spreadable so it can be used on large scale projects without wrecking the natural beauty and uniqueness of the mega taiga biome. If Mojang can of course change the state of podzol more then once if they have a different/new plan for the block. Something similar happened when we used to get seeds from tilling grass blocks, but no longer.
As much as I would love podzol to spread to other blocks, I prefer it to stay this way as podzol is supposed to be dead grass and fallen leaves and it wouldn't really make much sense for it to spread
You can see from this photo I took yesterday that it doesn't really get very thick either and gets taken over easily by grass and other plants if there is no direct tree cover:
This goes along more with my assertion that it should not spread but should be crafted or renew only under the trees it came from.
It's not Mojang's problem - it's your problem. It's like saying that cracked stone brick should spread to stone, because it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. It isn't even about realism.
These two make a good point.
Sorry, but no support.
Comparing podzol to stone brick is apples to oranges. Podzol is dead leaves yes, but it is part of a organic biological cycle. And in real life if you go and dug up the podzol in a forest new podzol would form. In Minecraft if you dig up the podzol, that's in no more podzol, ever. Which of those seems more unrealistic? It definitely makes more sense to have podzol re-form on dirt under tree in the mega taiga biome.
My point it this though, if you use the spreading mechanic like grass you give the player more control over their world. If someone doesn't like podzol but want to build a base in the mega taiga biome, they could dig up the podzol and replace it with grass, and that's how it would stay. Or if someone did want to use podzol they could gather it up, and get more from that same area later. Even if it just re-grew instead of spread, there would have to be a catch that it can't re-grow onto a grass block, because that would frustrate players who want to remove podzol from an area.
I agree with previous posts about podzol only spreading within a certain radius of mega taiga trees, and mega taiga trees also have saplings drop so more can be planted. Since podzol can only be found in mega taiga biomes it should only be created near mega taiga trees. Support, but with additions/changes.
It doesn't make sense that podzol would spread or be rapidly replaced, even in Minecraft. I like the idea of a block that is tough to get and is pretty much just for aesthetics. Everything shouldn't be easy to get.
Also podzol technically is not dead leaves and twigs. It's a leeching of soil due to a layer of acidic material on top of it. The podzol block in Minecraft is a misnomer.
It's not "my problem", it's just something I think would be a beneficial change to the game. So I'm suggesting it, that's what this forum is for. Most people seem to support the idea.

In real life podzol is type of soil not grass,it will not spreading like grass.
To topic:I support this even I find this unlogical comparing to real life podzol but Minecraft is video game I don't care about it.If podzol is spreading like grass,it give a special feeling where Minecraft is different than real life.Sometime Minecraft need sometimes need unlogical thing to bring back the fun,if Mojang focus too much on reality it take away the unique feeling of MInecraft.

I completely agree with your assessment of reality vs fun gameplay. Thanks for your support
This isn't really much of a restriction for podzol spreading, but it should be flammable and spread to other podzol, except that it doesn't burn away when ignited with a flint and steel or a fire charge, rather, it will turn into a dirt block when it burns up, as if the compost has incinerated. In addition, there is another factor in how fast fire spreads across podzol besides difficulty, and that's sunlight. When it's daytime, the fire spreads faster than at night, considering the sun is shining during the day, which is applying heat, and it's not at night, you do know that already. (Imagine having a fire start on podzol on hard and during the day! Way too fast, huh?!)
At first, I didn't want to support this because I felt this would violate realism, but after knowing that the laws of gravity apply to almost none of the blocks in Minecraft (which was proof that this game was not focused on realism), if I didn't know how to use commands, I just wanted a dirt road in my world and podzol could already spread, I would use that block.
Final decision forpodzol spread: 99.9999999999% (Get that as a pun, from a classic Cartoon Network show? Hint: Has something to do with "Grim adventures".)
Since Podzol is supposed to have an image that looks like dead leaves, then maybe you should be able to spread it onto grass blocks by placing and then breaking leaves.

For some reason Minecraft was on the mind and I saw PODZOL:

If the trees are allowed to grow densely you get podzol - if the trees are removed then grass takes over.
Perhaps such mechanics are possible in Minecraft.
Also podzol technically is not dead leaves and twigs. It's a leeching of soil due to a layer of acidic material on top of it. The podzol block in Minecraft is a misnomer.
1. It spreading, but only within Mega Taiga biomes
2. Dirt blocks under spruce trees gradually get transformed into podzol (either in general, or within a Mega Taiga biome).
Otherwise it doesn't really make sense to me.
