All the other suggestions I found like this were vague and pretty much just "Make animals breed naturally kthxbai".
So I decided to make this suggestion of new mechanics for animal breeding.
First off all animals (cows, pigs, chickens, sheep and horses) would eat grass in the same way as sheep do.
Whenever an animal eats grass it would have a chance of entering love mode in the same way as if it was fed by the player.
To prevent this from being overpowered there would be restrictions on how often they enter love mode when they eat grass. The restrictions are as follows:
Animals would have a radius around them in which the rate of them entering love mode is affected by the amount of animals in the radius.
The values are as follows:
The radius for cows, sheep and pigs is 16 blocks, for chickens it is 8 and for horses it is 48.
The size of the radius determines how dense a herd can get (smaller radius = denser herds).
If the animal is alone in the radius it will never enter love mode.
If there is 1-3 other animals in the radius it will enter love mode 50% of the time it east grass.
For 4-7 animals it is 25%.
For 8-15 it is 10%.
And for 16+ it is 0%.
Player based breeding would not be affected at all.
This system would be beneficial for the following reasons:
It would make hunting in Minecraft a viable source of food due to herds replacing any animals you kill over time.
It would give the player ability to farm animals without breeding them him/herself at the cost of requiring lots of space.
Realism.
Some people might not like due to the idea that herd of animals might grow out of control. This would not really be a problem since if a herd is growing larger and larger in the wild there is not really anything stopping the player from just going and killing them. The growth rate should be low enough for that not really become a problem anyway.
EDIT: To make sure wild animal numbers would not keep increasing forever, animals would be coded to prefer being near animals of their kind and tweaked the radii.
That is basically taking away the point of breeding, no support! Also basically you would see more baby cows randomly.
This does not take away the point of player breeding. This is just another way to do, a less efficient way but it is not meant to make player breeding easier anyway.

I see your point but, you could just breed a few then naturally then would breed! Doesn't seem balanced, no point in breeding unless you need it right away!
For a system in which animals can breed on their own to work well they also need to be able to die naturally, either from old age, lack of food, natural predators or disease. As you can see its nice adding realism and everything (I'd be happy if such stuff were added), but it could get quite complex if we wanted to be realistic. With these features not really implemented, the world will quite rapidly fill with animals.
That is where the player would come in and kill the animals him/herself. Given how slowly they would breed in small herds and how long it would take for the world to get filled with animals it would be unlikely that a player that does not want the animals would let their numbers grow for that long anyway.

What you are trying to say is not very clear...
With player based breeding if you have a good wheat/carrot farm you can just keep breeding them and their numbers can increase exponentially and if you do it in a small area you can use water to push them into a slaughter mechanism. With this no matter how many you have the rate at which they can breed can never really match that possible of player based breeding.
If animals were made to tend to stay near each other it would solve this problem.
You know this would not change the current system at all, right? It is just another way to do it.
I 100% support, and I want to remind people that if there are 16+ individuals nearby, they'll stop. It's not like they will never stop and the world will just be full of animals. I hope this gets implemented!
Agreed there's nothing wrong with the current breeding system, and it's quite easy to round up and breed tons of animals as it is with the addition of leads as well as the old system of leading animals with food sources. Plus animals tend to spawn in "heard" now anyway as shown in the screen shot below, this just fuels already lazy players.

1. The current player based breeding system would not be changed.
2. How is "It would just fuel already lazy players" any valid form of criticism?
3. No, 8 cows that happen to spawn near each other and have no other connection and will tend to wander away from each other over time anyway is not good enough.

If there is grass then they will slowly breed until they reach the limit for the amount of space.

I like this but the current system is best!

The 16 individuals thing can easily be fixed by leading animals out of the area. Water also works if you want automation.

That would be kind of annyoing to have to replace all of the grass blocks in the area with other blocks.
No Support.

Unless you put them in a tiny area the grass will likely grow back way faster then they can eat it.

I still think that this isn't a good idea.
