I had an idea for minecraft today. It is to be able to place gunpwder on the ground. The gunpowder would have the same texture as redstone, but grey. It would be able to activate fire. a redstone signal would set it off and it would continue. if you place too much in the same area (near each other) it could create a small explosion.
Actually sounds pretty cool - but the thread is shallow and vague. Maybe add pics? Everyone loves pics. Half Support.
pics are good. But what else would this do?
Being able to place gunpowder makes sense but how would it activate fire?
Would it be activated By fire?
How big would the explosion be?
This is essential stuff that needs to be said, Thanks.
I saw the thread and wanted to say "we have that, it's called TNT blocks", but then i actually read the post .
So the way I understand it, you want to be able to place gunpowder, and when the powder is lit or "activated" (by flint or steel or for example by a redstone signal?) the blocks covered in gunpowder catch fire, maybe one by one like a fuse?
That's not a bad idea, and I see potential here, especially in adventure maps. This can be used to make fire traps, to ignite wooden blocks or set off TNTs, and in all kinds of puzzles. There are ways of doing these kind of things already, of course (such as magma or dispenser with fire charges), but "placed gunpowder" sounds much more streamlined and also allows for other kinds of uses. Good idea !
To expand on it, maybe there could be different types of powder -- if you mixed two elements together (for example coal+gunpowder or blaze powder+gun powder), you could make more powerful powder that exploded when lit, rather than just burning?

I hate to say this, but... why? Either an idea has promise, or it doesn't. Isn't it possible to judge a concept on its own merits, without high-quality pictures and precise set-in-stone details? Whatever happened to discussing and developing ideas through brainstorming? Go take a screenshot of redstone on cobblestone and change the colour tone to greyscale, and you have a picture of placable gunpowder.
At first, the idea sounded kinda redundant... nothing that redstone + TNT couldn't accomplish. However, now that I'm picturing buildings that could be lit ablaze in a matter of seconds (depending on the spread rate)... this is sounding pretty cool. More details would be nice though.
I like this. You can already make fuses with redstone, but that's boring. It's be cool if you had one of those plunger like things to activate it as well, which would be sticks in the upper corners, iron in the middle and upper middle, redstone in the bottom, and planks on the corners, and when you right clicked it, the plunger would go down, and the fuse would catch fire and burn. Though then you could also light it manually with flint and steel.
I guess the part of it exploding if too much is near each other but if it takes 5 gunpowder or more to make that happen you might as well make another TnT.
No support, Redstone does the same thing and is substantially easier to get short of using a grinder. It is also reusable.

Well , the main idea was that i wanted to have a more streamlined way to spawn fire let it spread. I thought that the details could be left for Mojang, all i wanted to provide was an idea.

The main idea of it exploding was actually just for the players to take a precaution.
I feel that this could be useful in adventure maps, to create a musch more organized way of lighting fire.
And lastly I had the idea for a trap made by gunpowder in which the gunpowder placed is the same texture and size as string (when placed). You could fill a romm with it then set it off with a redstone signal.

More streamlined then just walking backwards while using a Flint and Steel? I don't think you can get more streamlined than that. No Gunpowder required, Flint and Iron are both common after you get Stone tools or higher, and in order to light the Gunpowder, you have to place it all so you are walking the same amount either way.

Place gunpowder wire than leads onto a huge tnt amount
lights up gunpowder with flint and steel
gunpowder primes tnt
Kaboom!!!
That way you don't waste redstone (more valuable than gunpowder) on making huge holes by a safe distance
Another feature may be, unlike redstone, the gunpowder "signal" will not weakens on far distances, saving some resources on the repeaters and redstone just for making explosions

"You and I are opposite sides of the same coin. When we face each other, we can finally see our true selves. There may be resemblance, but we never face the same direction."
This idea has potential but needs development and also needs to be more specific. Allow me to offer some supporting ideas.
* Placed gunpowder can be lit either by redstone or by fire, such as flint & steel.
* When the gunpowder burns, there will be a short "fizz" followed by a burst of fire in a 3x3x3 block cube (27 blocks) centered on the block where the gunpowder was. The fire will ignite any flammable blocks in the 27 block cube and will always ignite gunpowder in any of those blocks.
* The flame will also ignite the "fuse" for TNT blocks.
* The progression of the gunpowder-flame should be slower than redstone. I suggest 2 blocks per second.
* The gunpowder should be consumed in the process, leaving nothing (except fire) behind.
* Laying gunpowder on top of gunpowder will be impossible just as it's not possible to put redstone on top of redstone.
* No having the gunpowder explode. It's not useful enough to be worth the bother while still being annoying enough to make gunpowder trails not worth the bother. IE it wouldn't be useful, just annoying.
Possible exception to the last point above: If there are 26 solid blocks around the gunpowder, it explodes in a small enough blast to damage a 3x3x3 (or perhaps 5x5x5) area of stone and drop all of the affected blocks as resources. That would make gunpowder suitable for mining purposes, since you'd only need to leave a 1-block hole for the "fuse" (either redstone or gunpowder) and you could use cheap "packing" blocks such as wool to almost completely enclose the gunpowder in order to cause an explosion instead of a burn.
Anyone support Fire Charges? Oh, they exist already. No support, it's already a thing. I liked the idea and then I thought of it's uses. I would, however, like to see different colors of fire

Stick to the thread topic. Make a new thread for a different topic. Anyway, that's been suggested already.
