From the vampirism topic, I took the idea of players turning into monsters, and revamped it to work better and still keep balance in minecraft SMP.
Zombification is a special case, that if in SMP that you died from a zombie, you have a 15~50% chance (higher at night) that your character will becomes one too. Of course, you will still respawn as a normal player, but now you can hunt that ******* of the now awakened undead (that would be you) and reclaim your items from it.
It's more like a little twist on death, so rather than items spewing out, there can be a chance that a highly equipped player, could die and turn into a zombie, thus you may encounter it wearing all the armors and weapons the player once had.
This makes player-spawned-zombies more tougher since they can be armored.
Problem is, the zombies like to roam, so eventually you won't be able to find your dead body to reclaim your items...
The good thing is that zombies still burns in the day light, so it wouldn't die unless it went into a tunnel.
Servers don't spend CPU on maintaining areas that nobody is near, or on monsters that have no chance of running into players.
So you could POSSIBLY tie a equipped-zombie spawn to a player "tombstone" entity. But it wouldn't wander unless a player was near enough, and if the player leaves, it would probably despawn. Also, we don't want a field full of tombstones that kills anyone who enters.
How about this: boss zombies that collect equipment. They're tied to a dungeon spawn, and they take your gear and throw it in a chest if they kill you.
