There is virtually no use to hay blocks right now, besides decoration. (it han be fed to horses, but it is not really worth it).
Iron blocks, Gold blocks, Lapis blocks, etc are all storage/decorative blocks. Redstone and Coal blocks even have an additional use, so why isn't haybale a storage block? It would come in handy for people with giant wheat farms and wheat transportation, which makes a lot of sense IRL.
as a farmer who has real haybales and real cattle I know from personal experience that haybales can be taken apart to get hay and find it akward that I can't do it in minecraft.
That being said, bread is made from the grains of wheat, not the whole plant, and making square hay bales requires a machine, before steam powered balers were invented in the late 1800s farmers just piled hay up. That's why the square bales in skyrim annoy me, but I've given up on minecraft physics.

Since when is Minecraft supposed to be about realism?
What is a storage block? :I Sorry if I ask stupid, im new to minecraft.
Any material that can be craft into a block, and crafted back into what was used to make it.
Iron blocks, for example, are a storage block. It takes 9 ingots to craft one. Putting the block back in the crafting menu will make 9 ingots. That allows you to compress a ton of materials into less stacks. A stack of 64 iron blocks is effectively 576 ingots.
Somehow, my mind took this title to mean "we should be able to use it like a Chest" rather than "it should be able to become wheat again." Given the longstanding narrative history of people hiding in hay bales, I now demand that a single item or player can hide in a hay bale block. I demand this.
But also, your thing is important too.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.

haybales should be used as chests, but only for storing needles.
Sure! I was quite dismayed to find out that they were storage blocks HOWEVER: This should be metadata 1 so that people who originally made hay bales before this cannot duplicate it.
I do think it is a bit strange and even a bit silly that hay bales are pretty much just decorative blocks (don't mistake me for hatin' on decorative blocks; I'm not, I'm all for new things for builders to play with). When I first saw that they were introduced into the game, I thought the fact that we couldn't break down a hay bale was an oversight on Mojang's part. I hope they reconsider.
I propose than you can stop fall damage by jumping into haybales.
LEAP OF FAITH!
And also hide in them to avoid mobs, and put needles inside to distract mobs.
That aside, support because it makes zero sense to make wheat into a haybale and not being able to turn it back. Cutting red string is not difficult.

I hate people who like video games. I hate people who are hateful. I hate people that don't like spam. I hate people who like cake. I hate people who type in proper grammar and spell words properly on the internet. I hate hypocrites.

Support.
You can't craft them back into wheat?
Wow, I thought that was the whole idea. More support.
But also, your thing is important too.
