ok, my idea is that we can make various types of trap floors. if anything walks onto the floor or is placed on the floor, it will break. it would be visible to the person who made them, but it would look like normal floor to other players/monsters. they could be made with sand, gravel, dirt, and any other types of ground material. here is how i think it should be crafted:
Good idea. You should also have one that works with switches too. Just so I can have an evil trap door to activate when the hero shows up and starts up a speech about the morality of my ways. Preferably with a pit of crocodiles at the bottom. Failing that lava works I guess.

how about it looks like normal ground, but has little holes in it?
and while on the subject of traps, why not have swinging traps? connect a blade or Axe to a hinge, place it somewhere that needs protection, and connect that up to a pressure plate. monster steps on plate, and gets a face full of axe/sword
Trap doors shouldn't be indistinguishable from normal ground. Look similar to it, so you can not notice and fall in, but not identical.
To an extend I agree. It shouldn't be identical but it should be very hard to distinguish.
Just take a texture of one dirt block, and rotate it and make tiny changes to it.
Now when you place this along with other dirt blocks near it. From afar it looks normal, but up close, you notice the patterns doesn't match.
Also note the lighting. The textures will light up differently, meaning it makes it extremely hard to see if the dirt is different when lighting and "shadow" is changing it.
You could have a dirt block path, then something could be in the air, creating a shadow on the trap floor, making the texture of such block darker, thus fooling a player.
For trap floors, left clicking should always reveal it to be a trap, when it takes more than a few seconds to break a dirt block, you will know it's not a dirt block.
