Introduction In my opinion, skeletons are quite hard to kill. It may seem easy to kill a single skeleton, but a group of skeletons? They are sometimes quite hard and difficult to take down when you only have the basic Minecraft tools. Why not make skeletons easier to kill? Their bow accuracy is very high, and therefore, inflicting a lot of damage when you try to kill them. So it would be easier if they had made a few changes to the skeleton.
My suggestions - Make skeletons easier to kill, or to make them inflict less damage - Shoot their arrows less frequently at the player - See players in a smaller block radius (Skeletons currently see players in a 16 block radius) - Fires at players in a smaller block radius (Skeletons currently stop and shoot when the player is 10 blocks away)
Also, the Minecraft Wiki mentioned this about the skeletons' accuracy of shots, and the difficulty of melee combat a skeleton.
"Cleanly killing a skeleton generally requires the use of a bow and arrows. Melee combat will usually result in the player getting hit by at least one arrow before dispatching the skeleton, as dodging their arrows is very unlikely."
So if Mojang were to were to weaken the skeletons, I would wish that they won't fire their arrows as frequently. The skeletons also fire faster when the player comes close to them, as also stated in the Minecraft Wiki
"The closer the player gets to the skeleton, the faster it will shoot its arrows"
And another point is that the skeleton has a clever strategy to attack the player. Part of its movement strategies are designed so that the skeletons take minimal damage to the player. Another quote from the Minecraft Wiki states that too.
"When they are within 10 blocks of the player, with a clear line of sight, they will stop chasing and start shooting the player with arrows. If the player moves more than 16 blocks away from the skeleton, it will cease pursuit. Skeletons will attempt to avoid damage from the player by continuously circling around them while in combat."
As a conclusion, I feel that skeletons should be nerfed and made so that they are not as clever and as powerful as they are right now. I hope you would take this into consideration and hopefully, skeletons would not be as hard as they would have been!
The trouble with them is that they're nigh-unbeatable without gear, but given a diamond sword and some iron armor they can be slaughtered by the dozen.
That's the trouble with all Minecraft mobs, in fact. The only way to balance them would be for them to be strengthened based on the player wearing armor, which defeats the purpose of armor in the first place.
So, support, I guess, maybe. Okay I don't actually know anymore but whatever.
I can kill 2 skeletons on normal with no armour and a stone sword while surviving with just below half my health.
Although the faster firing rate IS annoying, it's not Over Powered.
I also did that by making one shoot the other. They can damage each other for some time, giving you time to eat and replenish your health. And by then you already have the advantage.
It's a little bit of a cycle. People want it nerfed, then they want it buffed. Nerf-Buff-Nerf-Buff. I'm personally fine with current strengths; I like the challenge (though, in my opinion, it isn't much of one). Besides, after the first few nights they don't seem so tough anymore with all of your new shiny gear.
Sorry to say you won't be able to find a supporter in me.
I agree with the guy above me. Skeletons are not that hard to kill if you know how to do it. All you have to do is run around it and it will almost always miss.
They are fine except the way they hit 9/10 shots at the maximum 10 block range. Even if you sprint around them they will still hit at least 8/10 shots. Pinpoint accuracy and firing an arrow a second is pretty annoying to actually get to.
Try fighting 3 skeletons at once from different angles. Trust me, it's not easy to hit them.

No...they don't almost always miss if you circle them. I've had skeletons facing away from me still hit me. They actually do have aimbot of some sort. It's annoying, and it doesn't miss 90% of the time.
They used to almost always miss if you circled them, I think, but not anymore.
By the way, you all know how mobs sometimes spawn in groups of four?
I had that happen, and I was in the middle of four skeletons. Only thing that saved me is they all fired at once, instead of in volleys like when you're in a cave and you're hunting for coal because you ran out of torches.
Volley-firing skeletons + no bow = run or die.
The easiest fix would be to make it so skeletons sync their fire rates so they don't fire wave after wave of arrows in groups; That way, you at least have a chance to approach groups of 3+ skeles.
I personally don't find a large groups of them to be hard once you get even some basic gear (Leather Armor, Stone Sword). A big part of what I see in the OP is they state they are hard to kill when you only have the basic tools. To me that says Hoe, Shovel, Axe, and Pickaxe, and probably the common Stone or Iron ones. But that is the point. They are supposed to be hard to kill if you don't have any means of defense like an actual weapon. And unless you spend the first day completely afk, there isn't a reason why you shouldn't have at least a Stone Sword.
I will say they seem to be a little bit too accurate, as you can be 10 blocks away and sprinting in circles around them and they will still hit you a fair amount of the time. So I have a proposition that might make everyone happy.
Currently, their damage is based on difficulty, their attack speed is based on range, and their accuracy is constant. I suggest it be changed so that their accuracy is based on difficulty (also partially based on range, no matter what their coded accuracy is how far away you are effects your time to dodge), their attack speed is based on range, and their damage is based on attack speed.
Lets throw up some theoretical numbers:
Maximum Range (Detection): 16 Blocks
Maximum Range (Attacking): 10 Blocks
Base Accuracy: 60% (Easy), 70% (Normal), 80% (Hard)
Attack Speed (Maximum Attack Range): 1 Shot every 3 Seconds (.33 Shots per Second)
Attack Speed (<3 Blocks Away): 1 Shot every 1 Second (1 Shots per Second)
Damage (Maximum Attack Range): 5 HP (2.5 Hearts)
Damage (<3 Blocks Away): 2 HP (1 Heart)
With these numbers, the Skeleton still retains the buff it received in the recent update. It will fire faster if you get closer. However, the damage is no longer constant, it decreases as you get closer by approximately 1 HP every 3 Blocks. This is because it increases the fire rate as you get closer, so it doesn't have as much time to draw the bowstring. Here is a rough chart:
Blocks Away: Damage/Attack Speed/DPS
11+: 0/0/0 (It is too far away to attack)
10: 5/3/1.66
9: 4/2.75/1.45
8: 4/2.5/1.6
7: 4/2.25/1.77
6: 3/2/1.5
5: 3/1.75/1.77
4: 3/1.5/2
3: 3/1.25/2.4
2: 2/1/2
1: 2/1/2
0: 2/1/2
So as you can see from that chart, the minimum and maximum DPS are 1.45 and 2.4, respectively. The average DPS is 1.75, rounding up to 2. That means that on average, it would take 10 seconds to kill an unarmored player at full health who is just standing there. That also assumes that each shot would be a hit, so it would actually take longer to kill you on lower difficulties. That time, factoring in accuracy values I stated earlier, equates to:
That is a fairly long time for an AFK player, so what if we reduce their maximum attack speed to 1.5? I won't show the whole chart again but it would increase their average DPS to 2.5 (rounding up), and the time to kill an unarmored AFK player would be 8 seconds on 100% accuracy, so the longest time would be 11.2 Seconds (Easy Difficulty). That still seems like it would be too slow to me. But I just wasted my lunch break typing this so I'll find out what you guys think later.

The only thing about Skeletons that needs to be nerfed is their unbelievable accuracy. As of now, you pretty much can't dodge them, but otherwise they're fine.
Partial support.
Honestly, I sort of hate how everybody in minecraft complains that X is OP/UP, and then demands it to be nerfed/buffed, to which after Mojang does this, the community wants it re-nerfed or re-buffed since it's too easy/too hard.
You know I used to be an adventure once, until I took a skeleton arrow to the knee.
sorry had to be said.
Just hide around corners. Really easy when you do that.
About that... pillar of 2 blocks, Hide behind it. skelly comes to you making them somewhat easy even right now. They are really only a threat in uhc (Ultra Hardcore).
I dunno, the new skeles shoot rediculously fast, and will shoot you the first milisecond you see them, making hiding behind stuff not prictical. with no armor and a stone sword, i can usually get out of a fight with one with half health. maybe lower their health a bit? The only way to fight them without a bow is sword charging, which makes them shoot faster.
They're really easy. You should always have at LEAST a stone sword by the end of the first night. You aren't supposed to charge at them! IRL if a laser was being shot at you would you charge into the laser or put up some cover? YOU WOULD PUT UP SOME COVER! Just carry around some blocks to hide behind!
