i dont like this idea; gold is already very useful for apples and you did not mention being able to trade them to villagers. Also making pyramids more complicated would be very annoying. I would however like lapis to have more uses.
Even if it didn't have all the uses it currently had, if the main focus was on pyramids, it'd be super late game, but you get gold pretty early on. In otherwords you'd have a material clogging up your bags/chests that's completely useless until later on.
Yes, after all gold only makes:
Clocks
Powered Rails
Weighted Pressure Plates
Glistering Melons
And from this, potions of healing
potions of harming
Golden Apples (Regenerates health faster)
Enchanted Golden Apples (Used to cure zombie villagers, or gives regen 4, fire resist and normal resist)
Golden Carrots (Triple original hunger)
And from this, potions of night vision
potions of invisibility
Star Shaped Fireworks
Beacons
Traded to villagers (you can get nearly any item from them btw)
Yep, gold is useless....no support.

Gold isn't useless. Do you even know how many things gold is used to make.
Gold Weapons.
Gold Tools.
Gold Nuggets.
Pressure Plate (light).
Gold Blocks.
Must I say more? I didn't think so, even though there are more things that can be made by gold.
How many times do I have to tell people, GOLD IS NOT USELESS! It has the fastest mining speed of ALL the tools! Just because it has bad durability does NOT mean it is useless...
No support. Gold is not useless. The lists that have been included in this thread is proof enough. Although, I would support a few extra trinkets. But it's not useless at all. Also, gold is great for hoarding!
Gold is naturally not very durable, but it lasts without tarnishing for millennia.

Sorry, but that is about the worst argument you can make for gold; try using a gold pickaxe to mine diamond (or even iron) ore; you'll see why gold tools are truly useless; how many people really need to quickly mine just 33 blocks of stone or coal ore? Or 33 wood, etc? Usually it is either a few blocks (for which stone, or in some cases iron, tools are fine) or many (for which you'll want the 6,248 uses an Unbreaking III diamond tool has*, never mind that you can easily get Efficiency V and put it on for a crazy overpowered tool; note also that mining speeds given in the Wiki fail to include a 0.25 second delay between breaking blocks (aside from "insta-mining", such as an Eff V shovel on dirt, which appears to be a bug), so the speed differences are less than you think even for unenchanted tools, plus mining times round up to the nearest tick (0.05 seconds; the minimum possible mining time per block unless you use TNT).
Of course, gold is certainly useful for many other things but tools, aside from aesthetics/decoration, are most definitely not one of them!
*I consider durability to be so important that I made my own tools that have 3x the uses of diamond; that's 18,744 uses with Unbreaking III (effectively 4,684 when repairing as you can only repair 1 unit at a time, restoring 1171 durability). Never mind that they are more expensive (repair cost and materials), more than offsetting the increase in durability; I can still easily repair them. (the mod that I based these on had even more durability; 5,000 uses or 20,000 with Unbreaking III)
Sure, gold may be sorta useless in the tools and combat columns, but as others have stated, gold is better in the other columns. Notch Apples make your nearly invincible, even to the strongest bosses, including ones from mods (OreSpawn). You can also make 4 potions out of gold (Potion of Healing and Night Vision, which can be inverted into Harming and Invisibility respectively. Clocks are not that helpful, but still are good.

Maybe a new dimension could be added using gold blocks aa the portal. I don't know if this would be good or not, but maybe something like a hardend clay or wool dimension, where everything looks normal besides being that material.

BayCraft has shut down
Gold stuff digs and chops faster then any other tool, swords have a better critical chance and you can make clocks and powered rails. There not completely useless but they could have some better use perhaps...

Also, I am glad that no one has called Gold "Butter" yet on this thread.

I agree; the only time I usually use a golden apple is when I'm fighting a boss.
Constantly evolving, reaching further heights.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
