Summary:
With the latest addition of Horses, the next logical step would be to have them pull wooden Wagons. Wagons come in a variety of types, Passenger, Chest, and Furnace. Wagons would be Crafted by placing Wooden Planks in an "H" shape in the crafting menu. Leave the top middle square blank for a standard Passenger Wagon, put a Chest for a Chest Wagon, or a Furnace for a Furnace Wagon.
Operation:
Passenger Wagon: Passenger Wagons would work like regular Minecarts. Right click to enter them and the arrow keys to move slowly. However, when another player is already in the wagon, right click to start pushing the wagon from behind. Right click again to release the wagon, and send the rider rolling off at their current speed. If it hits something at high enough speed, takes damage from mobs/falling or is hit by the player, it will break into wood planks and sticks, like a boat. You can still push them without right clicking, of course, but with significantly less control.
Chest Wagon: The same as a Minecart with a Chest, only you can't ride in them. Right click to begin pushing it around. Holds 1 Chest worth of items. Great for nomads or wandering traders. Works the same as a regular Passenger Wagon, but drops a Chest and its contents when destroyed.
Furnace Wagon: Same as the Furnace Minecart, for mobile smelting. Same control as the other Wagons. drops a Furnace and its contents when destroyed.
Horses: Right click a Horse with the Wagon equipped to attach it to the horse. Horses with Wagons cannot Jump, and move slightly slower.
Application:
So you wanna be a nomad. Travel around, wherever the wind takes you, atop your trusty steed. Unfortunately you're limited by what you can fit in your inventory. Wouldn't it be great if you could carry a chest around with you? But you don't have the stuff to make Rails, so you settle for the next best thing: You mount a Chest Wagon to your Horse, shout "HI-YAH" and ride off into the sunset.
Alternate Crafting:
A single axle version where the wood planks are built in a Y shape in the crafting menu.
Single Axle carts would tilt to either side when motionless, just for a visual effect.
