This would be kick-butt.
I would love gems. Maybe as a decoration, or maybe you can craft it onto an item to give it long life/make it stronger?

Ruby=sets enemies on fire
sapphire=freezes enemies
emerald=poisons enemies
You could add these to any weapon my simply crafting them together by putting the gem and the weapon above/below eachother. The higher grade the metal the more the effect works.
Three gems to make a cut gem? Gee, it sure is Diablo 2 around here.

First, Ignatius used the rock.
Then Billy asked Harry if he wanted to read his BDSM blog. Harry was so surprised that his pants flew right off. He was wearing women's underpants. The inquisitors were wearing them, too.

Agree, since it takes 2 diamonds to make a sword, the idea doesn't seem to fit to make 3 diamonds to make 1 gem. Not really into the enchant idea too much either, but ignoring that I like that most of the formulas make sense and I don't think "more rough = less fine" fits this game.
QUARTZZZZZ why? Well because gold IRL is normally found with quartz veins. Also diamond should spawn near coal veins. AND if oil is implemented the blocks surrounding it should be coal. IT JUST MAKES SENSE.
(sorry for the random post, but geology wise it goes along the lines of [coal~oil>diamond] so I think these materials should be found near eachother. Also quartz goes with gold and maybe certain combinations like smokey quartz, rose quartz, snowy quartz and clear quartz for more window types. Could make some awesome semi-transparent windows.)
If gems should ever get added, I think they should be able to be used as casting types for spells. You "craft" red stone dust with a gem stone, say sapphire for example to yield a water spell that will generate a single block of water. The "crafted" spell will last but only a limited amount of charges before it depletes itself, but spells like this would be very useful when deep underground and other, more common resources are limited. With emeralds, I'd think it would create a seed of some kind that you can grow into a crop source. Ruby? That should yield a block of magma. Topaz? Hmm... That's tough since the concept of electricity's still a little left field at the moment...
My suggestion is taking the idea of gems,
but changing it up a little.
Such that: Gemstones, other than diamonds, only appear within specific biomes, and extremely rare at that.
As in, if we had a Ruby which appeared in desert biome only, it would be spawned beneath all of the sand, somewhere. But only one in a pack, no 'multiple gems' in a spot. just one per find. ...and they would be rare enough not to be found very often at all. Perhaps sometimes just one gem per biome?
My suggestion is:
Ruby - Desert Biome
Sapphire - Snowy/Ice Biome
and Emerald - either Rainforest biome or Swamp biome.
Have it so that they're only in the most extreme biomes.
What would I propose their use be?
Either to make 'diamond' weapons, but of a different color, for showing off.
Or to make very special items.
Perhaps combine one Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Emerald, and some gold to make a crown?
What would the crown be for? showing off? Super defense?
I'm unsure. Their use is not for me to determine. In general, all I'm suggesting is have super-rare biome-specific minerals with special uses each. I merely suggest that the minerals be gemstones, but that's not even required either.
I would love more gems in the game, especially in conjunction with the display cabinet idea.
Gems covering the colour spectrum suspended in glass would be a neat decorative addition to any home. It would also go hand in hand with the "biomes should have varying underground structures " philosophy.
I like the idea of more gems, but I really dislike all the enchantment ideas. Magic really just doesn't go with Minecraft in my opinion. However, I like the idea posted above for having certain gems found in certain biomes. Dislike the idea of having them super-rare.
My 2 cents:
There should be more gems. They should share the same properties as diamonds. All should be craftable into blocks (Such as iron, diamond, and gold blocks). There should also be Opal and Topaz along with the gems, both with similar properties as the gems, and also found in specific biomes. Pearls should exist as random drops from sand (as long as it is not in a desert biome; that makes no sense), just like flint in gravel (Obviously more rare, as there is more sand than gravel in an average world). I like this idea just because it ads more options with what to do. You can never go wrong with more building blocks. Every time new ones are added, it's like getting a new box of Lego when you were a kid; the opened options were endless.
Now as for people wanting enchantments and magic, I really think that it does not fit Minecraft, as mentioned above, but I can guarantee you that if gem stones were implemented, there would be a new alchemy and magic mod out within minutes for you to play and enjoy. Personally I think it is much better as a mod.
The only problem I have with this is for needlessly using up more blocks out of the maximum that can be put in the game. Adding all of these would take up a large number of block and item IDs that could be used for blocks that are more than just aesthetically pleasing. Therefore I propose making them all instances of the Diamond IDs and Diamond blocks (Like coal/charcoal and all the colours of wool) so they share the exact same properties (With the exception of tools craftable with new materials).

While you do make some good points, I will argue against a point you make.
In this world, there are zombies, skeletons, giant spiders, exploding phallic shrubs, and portals to hell.
How is it that magic doesn't exist in this world?
Though, in agreement, if you're talking about things like throwing fireballs and the like, then yeah. Balancing issues. And god forbid being able to just MAKE water source blocks and Lava blocks. That's just insane.
Enchantment, that I can get behind, as long as it's interesting.
Tough on the subject of diamond veins, or gem vain in general, I have a suggestion to make. Instead of having separate gem blocks, there's a single gem block that, when broken, releases a random gem, or several random gems. Might take a bit of work, but It could help on the block ID.
I think making the gems increase the stats of your weaponry is a great idea. Like the degrading rate of armor (seeming as quick as it is now), could be delayed by placing certain types of refined gems on them.
But how rare would these gems be? Would they be randomly dispersed through ground levels or would they be equally attainable such as diamond?
3 Gems to make a cut gem? I would assume you would have to cut it with a chisel or a sharp object, not add more gems to make it cut.
In real life, not all gems out of a batch are of sufficient quality. Some crack, or are too small to work with, or have other imperfections that keep them from being used. I think that's what the OP was trying to represent.
I'd figure you have to make a Diamond Chisel - specifically Diamond - to cut any gem, since gems are some of the hardest substances on earth.
I do want to see more gems. After playing Terraria for a little while, I got almost distressed that the game, which some have called an inferior clone of Minecraft, seemed to be outdoing Minecraft by having half a dozen gems to toy around with.
(It's not an inferior game or a clone, by the way. If anything, it's the first in a wave of sensible follow-the-leader games. Minecraft is such a Genre Buster that I very much hope there's a bunch of followers yet to come.)
Anyway.
So we need gems, yeah. It'd make mining a lot more exciting, at least for a while (the Xtra Ores mod sure does that... maybe a little too much). And the magic/enchantment thing isn't off the charts, seeing as we're about to get potions and enchantments anyway. Gems could be worked in.
I don't want to see new tools made of gems, though. Diamond's fine, but it kinda bugs me how all the gem mods immediately jump to five different sets of tools and armor. Especially when Diamond is stronger than the rest of them to begin with.
But I do want to see gems.
As far as sorting, I could see either of these solutions working:
1. Find a Variety of Gems
When you dig up a block and find a cache of gems, they're of indeterminate quality. You sort them to find out how good they are. Maybe one in eight is Flawless, and two in eight are Good. We'd have to have something to do with the shards of imperfect gems, though.
2. Gems Reveal Weaknesses When You Try Them Out
When you try to enchant it or use it, sometimes the gem shatters. Maybe "often". This is the only way to know that the gem is not pure enough to use. So you need a lot of them to be sure of having it work.
