Join the CCCU (center for creeper counseling and understanding). They have feelings too.

that would be the same build schematic. It doesnt matter what way you build it, it still works.

Both of those works when crafting a bow.
I think it should be added as a "Back" slot. Along with a backpack for more inventory space, etc.

EDIT: I think it would be cool if they auto-deployed after a certain distance dropped. And you can maneuver it slightly to the left or right through the air.

Yes! Actually I want to straight-up fly, though I know that's sorta game-breaking. This would be a nice compromise. I like parachute as well, if only to save tedious (and potentially deadly) climbing downwards. Auto-deploys as long as it's in your bar, but not if just in inventory (?)
Definitely. Great idea. It should be equippable like a backpack and deploy when you press a certain key. It could be used of cloth and string. One cloth block in the middle and the rest of the space in the workbench filled with string.
- A parachute that is easy to make (say cloth and wire), deploys automatically as long as it's in your hotkey bar and you fall for more than say 4 blocks. Will move you vertically down at a safe pace. Player has no 'flying' controls. The item will wear out with use.
- A glider that is hard to make (say cloth, wire, gold, diamond or redstone). This you will have to deploy like a minecart and allows you to glide down from a cliff (or any other height). Player has control over the direction of flight, but the glider will slowly go down automatically (catch updrafts over lava?). It will also wear out with use.
silly idea?
I dont think a glider would be made with gold, diamond and redstone. And if diamond is used, i would prefer that it would never wear out with use.
Since this thread has gotten a little hectic, I suggest getting back to the original topic. A parachute isn't that bad of an idea and could be made from string and cloth as originally suggested. It should just be another item on your hotbar that you have to select and use by right clicking. Yes, this means you might not be able to get to it really quickly. The idea is that the player actually thinks ahead for a change and has the parachute close at hand if they're doing something like building or mining in the side of a cliff. Same if you're being chased by mobs. You know you're being chased toward a cliff, so you go ahead and have your parachute ready.
Since it's mostly just for emergencies, I think it should be a one time use. So you activate it by right clicking and it lasts until you land or until you right click again to ditch it.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways
Not to revive a dead topic but it was either that or make a new one. So. I like the idea of a parachute a lot, but I was thinking more of a base jumping one. Something that has the mechanics of a tool (limited uses, but better materials makes it last longer). I have a world where I have a lot of spots that I could base jumping spots so I was thinking, Right Click Hold for it to deploy, Shift to flare, and ASWD for steering. I also think it would be fun for servers to be able to brag about how good there base jumping is. Just an other idea for the melting pot.
support, but i just wanna add one more thing, how about if a skeleton arrow hits you the parachute is gone and u fall, oh and its a one time use so you always have to make a new one, it'll encourage spider hunting

Therefore, I clearly deserve a dog biscuit for having been such a good boy.
*dog biscuit floats down, on a parachute!* See? It's on topic. Parachute. See? See?
...Yeah, this is just a bump.
