the only issue with the sound emanating from leaf blocks is, what would determine whether it was a river sound, ocean sound, etc etc
Well, here is how it would go.
River Sound: Emanates from water blocks if the block exists within a River biome.
Ocean Sound: Emanates from water blocks if the block exists within a Ocean biome.
Desert Sound: Emanates throughout air blocks in desert biomes within areas of sand.
Night-time Cricket Sounds: Emanates from talls grass blocks within Forest, EX Hills, plains, and Taiga biomes.
Snow Sounds: Only play during Snow.
Cave Sounds: Emanates from cavities that are 3x3 big, atleast 10 blocks from natural light, and under light conditions of 3 or below. (If the limit was higher it could cause problems during night time)
Night-time River Sounds: Emanates from River Biomes hit by moonlight
UnderWater Sounds: Plays when the player is atleast 4 blocks below a 2X2 water space. (The noise is softer when above 4 blocks and completely gone when your head is out of water)
Well we already have the cave ambiance sound so this seems like a good idea, one thing I want to suggest though is that, like ambiance, it is not all the time as it would get really repetitive, maybe have a few clips for each biome and make the volume controls separate to rain and mobs and general sound. I think it should be more often than ambiance though.
Well to prevent the feeling of repetition would be a longer interval of sounds. Like a sound effect for ocean waves would be say for instance be the length of a music sound disc approximately 1-2 minutes long. Eventually the player wouldn't pay attentionand repetition wouldnt be as bad.
I like the idea. In fact, since beta until 1.4.7, There was a folder called "loop" in resources. If you have a backup of older versions, you will see that there are actually "biome ambience" which was never implemented. The folder was removed when minecraft was updated to 1.5. The sounds were 45 - 60 seconds long with the exception of "waterfall.ogg" which was 5 seconds long. I believed that Notch was actually going to make use of those sounds but unfortunately not. I actually played minecraft while the sounds were playing in the background to be honest. Haha. But having it play automatically and in the game itself would be awesome and would really make the gameplay more interesting. Unless Mojang is going to incorporate the use of birds, then some of these ambiences would be quite useless. Since birds make pretty chirping songs and all.

Why are you reading this when there's the good stuff up there.
Im not exactly positive, i could be wrong, but i think i saw in a tweet that they were promising more mobs such as fish, birds, and tree dwelling type things. Once again, could be wrong.

Good idea
Maybe something for the End and the Nether too?
What noise would a mushroom biome have?
