Seems good, but we can achieve nighttime detectors easily, it needs a different use. Also needs a different texture, only someone with eagle eyes could spot that ore color.
Why can't we just use the daylight detector and an inverter?
Also, I don't like the name. Since it looks like just a purple gem, I think you should call it amythest.
Hey, use the 'Soul' concept. How about making a recipe for a spawn egg in survival? Take an item that is unique to the mob(Skel: Bones, Spider: String, Chicken: Chicken) then craft it with a Soul Gem to make a(or several) spawn egg(s).
Also, tell me how rare it is. E.G: It's as rare as Iron, it occurs in 0.15% of Netherrack, it's 10 times rarer than quartz, etc
How about this? An example:
Nether Soul Ore: Occurs in 0.14%(1/5 th of Nether Quartz) of original Netherrack. Since the souls have a tendency to float up, it will not be formed below 32 blocks above from the great sea of lava.(y=64 or above) It is the only ore that height is restricted to y and over, not y and under. Netherrack is very easy to see in the Nether, so finding it might be less of a challenge compared to actually mining.
It occurs in veins of 3~12, and the most common size is 6 and 8. This means you will, on average, find a vein in a 70 x 70 x 1 flat square surface.
This definitely needs more uses. A soul crystal just the concept has so much potential, and due to it's rarity it could be an incredible addition to the game. These are some ideas, not necessarily fully implement able, but ideas nonetheless. Idea 1: bejeweled weapons, soul stealers. With either a life sap (they lose life you gain it)ability or a wither-type ability. Could be crafted by placing a soul gem beside the first ore block in a sword, or the second stick in the axe, etc. etc. also, what about a beacon reverser or simply a negative beacon? By this I mean either adding say 4 soul gems to a beacon it would reverse the effect and cause either harm or slowness or such things to those in range. Or, crafted as it's own contraption, by say a block of soul gems surrounded by glow stone and glass to make a here beacon. Useful for defense around a territory. Or as a help to fighting things like the ender dragon or farming difficult mobs like blazes. Or, my most far-fetched idea, is to use it as a recipe for a nether-mob-taming device. For example, a soul crystal + ghast tear, and blaze powder = soul crystal, or nether soul crystal. This could be used for one of two things, or both. 1: it could be held out and no nether mobs would attack, as a pacifier. Or 2: if held and the player right-clicks on a mob, the crystal is consumed and the mob is tamed, much like a wolf. Thoughts on these ideas? Expansions, additions, or why they wouldn't work?

Spawn Eggs are Creative-only items. And for your words in green, I'm adding that.

Wow, this is a great idea! The night detector would be great if you put it on top of a redstone lamp. Night lamps would be enabled. You mentioned a new name at the bottom of the page too. I think the new name should be Nether Amethyst. It sound more fitting to Minecraft.
The NOT gate for daylight sensors and the covered sensor is not working for nighttime. I guess the night detector will be a good thing to use instead.
Night Sensor: No Support
NOT gates works just fine with daylight sensors and are easy to build (one block and one redstone torch) so, in my opinion, night detectors are quite useless.
Maybe think of other kind of sensor. What about, instead of night detector, be able to craft a Proximity Sensor?
Proximity Sensor:
Emits signal when any mob or player gets close to it.
Detection Range: 5 blocks radius.
Useful for adventure mode, arrow / firecharge dispensers, hidden mechanisms, etc.
Examples:
Build a lighting system which lights when you get in your house.
Connect proximity sensors to command blocks.

I would say it's frequency should be close to that of emerald, but without the biome restriction. Only if it has more uses like the ones I said, if not it should be more common.
Soul Star: Combine a Nether Soul Shard with a nether star and you get 64 soul stars. Item type = Throwing Weapon. Damage: 2 hearts. Shape: Purple Nether Star. Other notes: Consumed when thrown. Can be enchanted.
Now, I wouldn't have a problem with this if you didn't have to have a nether star to make it. I have on multiple occasions gone wither skull hunting in both survival and creative mode, spent three hours average for each hunt, and have only been able to make the wither twice, once on creative and once on survival. I was only able to get the nether star on creative, because even with blast protection 2 diamond armor, I still got killed...repeatedly. Would make more sense if you just made the crafting recipe into a star shape and decreased the amount of stars it gave you, say down to 16.
So, for the main suggestion, good idea, but I partially support it. There is really no need for a nightime sensor, it is as easy as placing a redstone torch on a block leading to a daylight sensor to make one. Maybe making a trap block would work? Say, something that looks like a mob spawner, but when a mob touches it the mob gets sucked in and its drops get stored in one of its 3 inventory slots? May be a little op, but its just an idea. Also, instead of having it in Netherrack, why not make it in soul sand, since it is called a "Soul Shard/Gem"
Firstly, Torches do not accurately invert the signal. If it is at high power, off. Medium power, off. Low power, off. No power, full power. You can't make accurate night sensors.
I think the night sensor should be one of the features that come with this new ore. My reason, why not, and it just more convenient in general.
Nether Amethyst doesn't float so well with me. It just doesn't really sound like the nether to me. Also, why would you need to craft soul sand? I've personally never had trouble finding/obtaining it in the game, so I don't see why it needs to be crafted.
So I support the name "Soul Shards" and maybe you could call the storage block something like "Soul Essence" or "Soul Glass". Something with a ring of awe and authenticity.
And, I've wondered this, what does dizziness have to do with souls/amethyst? Either one of those don't really make sense to brew that potion (though I think it should be added as a potion). These are souls we are talking about. Think spirits/dark magic/and the sort. A whole new branch of magic could be made in minecraft with this. We have redstone, enchanting, brewing, and ender as our supernatural magics in the game. So why not make a nether branch of power?
My point is, I think this ore idea is fantastic. I think it has a ton of potential. So I'm going to throw suggestions (on all ends of the spectrum, mostly less conservative ones).
You've put a lot of work into this, and for that alone, I'll give you +1 rep. I see some issues though:
That ore texture might be more interesting if it's not so similar to Emerald Ore's patterns.
You simply recolored the ruby, which isn't that bad because the ruby wasn't finalized in the game. Still, a little more originality might work better there.
Though I like the Night Detector, couldn't the same nighttime-related goals be done with the normal Daylight Sensor and a clever Redstone Comparator setup? Someone else is gonna have to help me out on that one, as I'm not a pro with some redstone mechanics.
NOT gate is a simple gate using one block and a redstone torch to reverse the signal.
thus the NOT gate can make a night detector

You can make them accurate by laying redstone and placing redstone torch on what light level you want it to trigger.
It's still more convenient to have the night time sensor. Hypothetically, you can make a daylight sensor without the daylight sensor, simply get enough repeaters to run full cycle for the length of the day/night so that whatever you want working at the time of day you want works. As you can see though, this takes up a lot of space and work.
This ^ is an exaggerated example, I realize NOT gates don't take up nearly that much room, but it is still more convenient. And also mentioned, a Night Time Sensor is only one of the uses for this ore.
Oh, I also liked the new potion idea. I think it better suits the ore than the dizziness potion did. Each effect should be a low debuff, like a level one. Otherwise I think it would be a little op, and the combined effect of several weaker debuffs seems to be better in my mind so they wouldn't need to be strong.
